Apr 22, 2016Flowers coming to downtown Greenville this summer
Greenville is being tended to by city workers this spring.
Board members agreed without taking a vote to seek bids from Horrocks Nursery Farms in Ionia on potential costs of annual flowers.
Ralph said the board would discuss and potentially vote on bids at the board’s next meeting in May, and Bosanic said he would reach out for additional bids on acquiring structures to cover the stumps and provide colorful flowers.
Downtown brickwork
Bosanic said a due to overgrowing root systems from trees planted downtown, a number of areas along the sidewalk and in the roadway featuring brickwork have been damaged.
“The sidewalks are feeling the consequence of the enormity of the trees,” he said. “They’ve been there for decades, they need room, they are making room, and it is breaking things.”
Bosanic said the trees downtown were donated to the city “in the ’50s or ’60s” and are large enough now that they are causing annual problems.
“We did trim them up, and they look really nice, but is it worth having the large trees and putting up with the mess they create at their base or is it time to move on and think about replacing them with something else that decades from now, wouldn’t be causing such a problem? It currently makes it challenging to do the brick repair, but it’s not insurmountable,” he said.
Bosanic said city workers have been completing sidewalk brick repair throughout the past month, and as the weather has improved, the crosswalks are now also being repaired.
“The brick work is continuing, everything is done on the sidewalks, and they are now working in the streets on the crosswalks,” he said.
