Biggest L.A. corpse flower at the Huntington: What to know - Los Angeles Times

YouTube, but this year will be different as the Huntington, like most museums and botanical gardens in Los Angeles, has reopened to full capacity. This year’s tropical plant, affectionately called “Stankosaurus Rex,” is not only unique for its accessibility; it is the biggest specimen in Huntington history. “We are all very excited,” said Brandon Tam, the Huntington’s Orchid Collections specialist who also oversees dozens of rare corpse flowers in a greenhouse, where many of the stinky plants are positioned to provide protective shade for delicate orchids. Lifestyle How to keep Trader Joe’s orchids alive and other tips from the Huntington’s expert Lifestyle How to keep Trader Joe’s orchids alive and other tips from the Huntington’s expert The No. 1 reason people kill their orchids is they overwater them. After taking most of 2020 season off, Flower Fields set to bloom again - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Online-only ticket sales, timed ticket entry, reduced capacity rules and face mask requirements will be implemented for the first time. But Clarke said visitors will be in for a spectacular show, because the flower seeds germinated so well during the fall planting season.“We had a fantastic germination this year, so it’s going to be really beautiful here,” Clarke said, during a walk around the property Wednesday, where a handful of staff gardeners and volunteers were busy getting things ready for next week.Staff gardener Judy MacKenzie was trimming up greenery in the artist gardens near the Flower Fields’ front entrance. For the third year in a row, she’s creating scenic spots where visitors can pose for selfies. This year, she’s created garden archways with hanging mosaic artwork. Last year, she created an elaborate “Pot Head” garden featuring pots resembling ancient Greek busts that have plants growing out of their “heads.” She said it was heartbreaking putting so much work into the potheads last year, only to see the attraction close.“I came back to look at it a few weeks later and it looked so good but there was nobody here to enjoy it,” MacKenzie said. To ensure safe social distancing, The Flower Fields in Carlsbad will reopen March 1 with online-only ticket sales, timed entry and marked queues out front for visitor check-ins.(Eduardo Contreras/The San Diego Union-Tribune) Over the past quarter-century, the Flower Fields have become one of the region’s most-photographed tourist attractions. In the early years, Clarke was thrilled to welcome 75,000 visitors between March 1 and Mother’s Day weekend. But with the advent of Instagram and other social media platforms, business exploded. In 2019, the attraction drew nearly 300,000.The long sloping hillside, which stretches for one mile along Armada Drive from Cannon Road south to Palomar Airport Road, has been home to flowering plants since 1923, when Paul Ecke Sr. moved his family’s poinsettia-growing operation south from Los Angeles. When the Eckes transitioned from cut poinsettia flowers to potted poinsettia plants and moved their growing operations inside greenhouses, the Carlsbad fields were leased in 1965 to another local grower, Edwin Frazee. His family b...

A socially-distanced day of love: how to safely celebrate Valentine's Day from home • UNC Mirror - University of Northern Colorado The Mirror

Movie night on the couch- Or on Zoom Advertisement Movie theaters may be open with limited capacity, but some Greeley residents may not feel comfortable being in an enclosed space with strangers quite yet. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of catching a flick in public, you can still participate in this textbook night out by turning it into a textbook night in. Popular streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have hundreds of hours of classic couples’ movies to watch, giving you a perfect excuse to pop some popcorn and slip into your sweats. Greeley resident Rory Cauley and his partner, Jacob Cross, built their relationship on a shared love of going to the movies. With the pandemic raging, Cauley said the pair plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day by watching their favorite romcom on the couch to try and recapture the feeling of watching a film on the big screen. “Our favorite romantic movie is “10 Things I Hate About You” on Netflix. I’ve really missed movie theater popcorn, so when I get my next paycheck, I’m gonna see if I can get some of that movie theater butter to make the experience feel a little more real,” Cauley said. If you’re single and waiting for a safer time to mingle, try Zoom’s screen sharing feature for a movie night with your favorite people. Take a tour of Denver- From anywhere Couples from all over Colorado like taking in the sights of the capitol city on Valentine’s Day. However, just because these locations are temporarily unavailable in person does not mean they’re not available at all. Virtually Denver is a portal on denver.org that connects Colorado residents with virtual tours and events happening all throughout the state. Guests can tour exhibits at the Denver Museum of Art, go on a virtual Safari at the Denver zoo, or stream live concerts, all from the comfort of their own homes. Anna Rosenthal, a UNC fourth-year theater education major, recently went on the virtual tour of the Denver Museum of Art with an unnamed Tinder date. She said her favorite type of date nights are experience based, and she was glad she could still take in new sights with a romantic prospect. “It was nice still getting to experience a date. It almost felt normal, and that was nice. There was no social pressure. We could tour the museum at our own pace, and they made it really easy to navigate,” Rosenthal said.
