Bike racks, flowers enliven downtown Manitowoc

Eighth and Quay streets, the parking lot near the SS Badger port, and a few on Calumet Avenue and Maritime Drive. The blooms are a variety of species and are planted in an array of colorful pots. “We want to make the project bigger next year and we want to do more fundraising,” Wills said. “We want to welcome people from the Badger and to make our residents feel proud of their city.” This year, $700 of a $1,700 budget was spent on the project. Progress Lakeshore, the City of Manitowoc and other involved parties see the updates and changes as being about community. They want to see people get involved, offer new ideas and help make Manitowoc a better place. “Things are changing ... how do you not want to be a part of that?” Nelson asked. Volunteers are needed to help water flowers in the planters. For details, contact Progress Lakeshore at 920-482-0540. Tour features yards that are back in bloom

I'm re-doing my flower garden this year. It was very unkempt, since I let it go for two years," said Keri Johnson of Calumet City, Illinois. "I'm getting great ideas today and this is motivating me to finish my project before summer is over." Choosing the right greenery, and planting in the sandy soil of the Calumet Region can present challenges, according to MGC members, who offered four free informational seminars in the Aquatorium meeting room during the two-day event. More than 100 Miller Garden Club volunteers put together this year's event. "It is very labor-intensive," Channing said. "Luckily, we have devoted members and volunteers that make it happen."
