Flowers shines, South Florida routs Northern Illinois

Flowers accounted for 403 of his team's 658 yards total offense while tossing TD passes of 73 yards to Ryeshene Bronson, 26 yards to Rodney Adams, 13 yards to D'Ernest Johnson and 6 yards to Chris Barr. The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 53 yards on 11 carries, helping the Bulls (2-0) — preseason favorites to win the American's East Division — remain unbeaten through two games for the first time in four seasons under coach Willie Taggart. "2-0! It's been awhile," Taggart, 14-23 in his first three seasons with the Bulls, said. "Climbing is easier than hanging on." Northern Illinois quarterback Drew Hare was carted off the field with an apparent left leg injury midway through the third quarter. The redshirt senior missed the last five games of 2015 with a right Achilles injury. Backup Ryan Graham threw an 11-yard TD pass to Aregeros Turner, who also scored on a 4 run for the Huskies, who lost their season opener at Wyoming 40-34 in triple overtime. THE TAKEAWAY Northern Illinois: The Huskies have played in six straight Mid-American Conference championships games and also appeared in a league-record eight consecutive bowl games, which is to say the most important part of their season is still ahead of them. The 0-2 start will mean little if NIU can rebound — especially defensively — to make another strong run in conference play. South Flori... (WGEM)

Man arrested in 2012 homicide

Photo: Provided) Flowers was shot five times, detectives said Friday, in the face, abdomen and both legs. He died three weeks after the shooting at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Police found 17 shell cases at the scene. Sgt. Jeff Case said Friday the investigation into the cold case was reopened nearly a year ago as the department and prosecutor began investigating old homicides. Members of the detective bureau, Fusion Center, Special Investigations Unit and the Gang Suppression Unit in addition to the prosecutor's office worked on the case. As part of the investigation, Case said interviews were conducted again with people who police believed at the time had some information about the shooting. Case said Wilson had been a possible suspect at the time. Investigators said after Flowers died that he had given them the name of the person he believed shot him and police talked with him then but no arrests were made. Case declined to say what new information led to the warrant and arrest. After the shooting, both the father and grandfather of the victim said they did not know why Flowers would have been shot. "I don't know what happened," Alex Flowers, his grandfather, said then. " He was a good grandson and I loved him very much." Joseph Flower's father, David Flowers, said four years ago that his son had a landscaping business and enjoyed sports. "He was an average sports junkie like his dad," David Flowers said. He also had a son and three brothers. Contact Trace Christenson at 269-966-0685 or tchrist@battlecreekenquirer.com. Follow him on Twitter: @TSChristenson. New mother who lost fiance and mom in crash living 'day by day'

The same week the 24-year-old new mother should have celebrated a new life, she had to bury two of her biggest supporters. She was discharged from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo one day before back-to-back visitations and funeral services for Skokan and Nichols. Police say Skokan was driving with Nichols in the passenger seat just before 4 p.m. when he lost control of the car on a stretch of South 26th Street near Cork Street in Comstock Township. The car hit a tree, killing Skokan and Nichols. Matrau-Belt found out about the crash three hours after Jeremiah's birth. "I think it went all kind of fast," she said Wednesday of week following her son's birth and the deaths of her fiancé and mother. "I didn't really process a lot that week, so it was the next week and into this week that I've processed what happened. ... I don't remember a lot of my hospital stay. "I didn't get much sleep that whole week." As she grieved the losses of her fiance and mother, Matrau-Belt had to find a way to get through Christmas. It was supposed to be a day of celebration, as Skokan and Matrau-Belt's uncle had been helping her mother repair her fire-damaged house so that the family could celebrate Jeremiah's first Christmas at his grandma's newly repaired home. Instead, Matrau-Belt said, she celebrated with her father and stepmother, and later in the day she spent time with her stepfather, who also was celebrating his first Christmas without his spouse. "It was hard, definitely fighting back a lot of tears," she said of Christmas Day. "It was definitely different." Late... (MLive.com)
