Michigan Design CenterScavolini Store Detroit, a high-end kitchen store, has relocated to the Michigan Design Center in Troy after nearly a decade in Birmingham. Scavolini, founded in Pesaro, Italy in 1961, is known for its elegant, modern kitchens. Owner Niki Serras said several factors played a role in her decision to relocate to the design center. “After we opened Scavolini Store Detroit in Birmingham, we launched locations at design centers in Chicago and Boston, and we found it easier to operate there as opposed to a street location,” she says. “There are a lot of clients and trade members who go to design centers for the purpose of specifying for their projects. We think there’s value in critical mass." Scavolini Store Detroit is located in Suite 37 at the MDC, 1700 Stutz Drive. To learn more about Scavolini, go to cucinamoda.com.
Nov 28, 2018'Happiness and Joy': Flower Truck Popping up Around Birmingham Lets Customers Make Their Own Bouquets - Over the Mountain Journal
For a holiday gift that has a pop of color, the Wild Honey Flower Truck sells seasonal, international flowers by the stem. It makes stops around the Birmingham metro area to give people the opportunity to build a bouquet.
Kris Farley with her creation.
"Sharing it with people has been really exciting, just to see people's reactions," said Josh Sizemore, who launched the business with his wife, Kelsey. "It's fun to see what the experience is like putting bouquets together. I think it's something that a lot of people have never gotten to do. So, it's fun to see people walk through that experience. I think people just really enjoy it."
The couple started throwing around ideas for the business a few months after they got married last year. When they found a 1963 Ford Econoline truck for sale on Craigslist, they decided to move forward.
"Once we fell in love with the truck, we were like, ‘We're going for this,'" Josh said.
After giving the truck a paint job and adding an awning, among other restorations, the popup flower truck was ready for business. And so far, Kelsey said, it's been driving well.
"We haven't had any issues yet," she said.
Kelsey - who still works at Forge in Birmingham as a community manager - helps people pick out which flowers will look good in a bouquet. Josh - who is a co-owner at Breakout Games in Homewood - operates the card read...

Jul 26, 2018Meet Craig's flower power stall at Taunton's Farmers' Market
BIRMINGHAM band, The Move had a big hit with their single Flowers in the Rain.
It reached number two in 1967 and it has a chorus of: "I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain, Feel the power of the rain making the garden grow. I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain, Feel the power of the rain keeping me good."
This record and the Birmingham connection is apposite for Taunton florist/ market trader, Craig Daly.
Since he was 11-years-old, Craig has been working one way or another on a market stall selling flowers.
He started off working in the market in the Bull Ring in Birmingham with his elder brother where there was a row of stalls selling flowers and each seller did their bit to try and stand out.
They would each try be a ‘showman' and being an old fashioned market trader.
This is exactly what Craig is, as he is out front, meeting customers, giving them the patter about the best deal and making sure they are taken care of each time.

Dec 29, 2017Late-blooming Bulls persevere
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Quinton Flowers did it again at the Birmingham Bowl, launching another winning touchdown throw with a game against a Power 5 team on the line.Flowers threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Tyre McCants with 16 seconds left to give No. 23 South Florida a 38-34 victory over Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl on Saturday.Flowers led the Bulls (10-2) to a second straight dramatic victory in the bowl game at Legion Field, throwing for a pair of touchdowns in the final 4:26 after struggling in the first half. “I was telling myself, I’ve got to hit my guys in the chest,” Flowers said. “I’ve got to put the ball in their chest and just give them a chance. I just went out there and my coach called the play that I wanted and thank God Tyre did what he was supposed to do and I did what I was supposed to do and we came out with the victory.” The Bulls, who are 21-4 the past two seasons, won last year’s Birmingham Bowl on Flowers’ 25-yard touchdown pass in overtime against South Carolin... Sep 22, 2017A Flower for the Graves
It was 54 years ago today, Sept. 15, 1963, that a bomb ripped through a church in Birmingham, killing four little girls and wounding the heart of America. It was a Sunday morning and Eugene Patterson, the executive editor of both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was cutting his grass. Between 1960 and 1968, Patterson wrote a signed column every day. His column for that Monday’s paper was already written. But he rushed to the office and ripped it off the page. Then he sat down and wrote, “A Flower for the Graves,” for Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson and Carol Denise McNair. In the column, Patterson – who would win a Pulitzer Prize for his 1967 editorials for the AJC -- writes about a mourning mother who holds a small shoe dug from the smoldering rubble that belonged to her daughter. Most significantly, he asks the people of the South – the white people – to take responsibility for the deaths of the girls. “Only we can trace the truth, Southerner -- you and I,” Patterson wrote. “We broke those children’s bodies.” Martin Luther King Jr., in his eulo...
