Obituary: Peter Bartlett - Press Herald

Martha Elliott of Rumford; sister-in-law, Brenda (Walter) McCallister, of Standish; aunt Carol LaGrange and aunt Elaine (Ken) Buckley, all of Bangor; uncle Thomas (Linda) Carmichael of Lynnfield, Mass.; aunt Judy Craig of Snellville, Ga.; uncle, Frank Hollis of Rockport; nieces, Jessica and Jena Bartlett; nephews, Ben and Kyle McCallister; as well as many cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Rodney and Flora Carmichael, and Albert and Ann Bartlett, his father-in-law, Joseph Elliott, and aunt Sue Hollis. Visiting hours will be held at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, Maine, 04096, on Monday, Dec. 16, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at First Parish Congregational Church, 116 Main St., Yarmouth, Maine, on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. Friends and family are invited to sign the online guest book and share memories with the family at www.lindquistfuneralhome.com In the spirit of the Christmas season, the family will be collecting new, unwrapped toys, hats, mittens, gloves, and socks that will be donated to those in need. TweetBDN File PhotoThis weekend brings my personal favorite Bangor-area herald of spring: the 51st annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race, set for Saturday morning. Paddlers leave the gates in Kenduskeag at 8:30 p.m. and start arriving in downtown Bangor around 11 a.m. Find your spot to watch along the race route and have fun! Temperatures are supposed to be between 45 and 50 degrees, so warm enough to not be miserable. That should really be on a t-shirt. April in Maine: Warm enough to not be miserable.Canoe race aside, in Bangor on Friday night, the I Love The 2000s Tour comes to the Cross Insurance Center, featuring Ja Rule, Ashanti, Mase and Chingy (there’s an after-party with DJ 2Phat at the Downunder Club at Seasons). Elsewhere in town, post-hardcore bands Savor, Dearbones, Wait and Wolves Among Sleep are at the Bangor Arts Exchange, there’s the monthly Bangor Contradance at 8 p.m. at the UU Church, Allison Bankston and Hippie Soup are at Nocturnem Drafthaus, and the Fremont Street String Band is at Black Bear Brewing. Gardening: Flower shows offer spring in deep winter

I imagine it will be similar in size and scope to the Vermont Flower Show — which is now an every-other year show, and is not occurring this year.Bangor, Maine, has an annual flower show, though I’ve never attended. This year it will be held in the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, on April 20 to 22. If you go, please contact me so I’ll learn more about it.Last year I crossed one more item off my “Bucket List”. My partner Cindy Heath and I flew to London and attended the Chelsea Flower Show. It is in a league by itself, both in size and scope. Mostly outdoors, it includes displays with full-sized trees planted for the week. Under a big tent are displays of flowers of every ilk: hellebores, alliums, iris, narcissus, tulips, vegetables, carnivorous plants and much, much more. If you plan to go, join the Royal Horticulture Society to get reduced prices and access before the rest of the world (the first two days are just for RHS members). One member can bring in three guests. The Brits love their flowers, and know how to celebrate them. Bring a flowered dress or vest and bowtie, and walk around drinking champagne if you wish — many people do.I called my friend Jill Nooney of Bedrock Gardens in Lee, New Hampshire, to talk about the flower shows. Jill has exhibited at the Boston Show seven times, winning many awards for her garden designs. I asked her, why go to the flower shows? “Nobody can resist the smell of humid mulch-filled air in the middle of March,” she said. I agree.
