May 24, 2018The best spots to see flowers bloom in metro Detroit
Tribute Garden, Rose Garden, and a Butterfly House. The Peony Garden at Nichols ArboretumSunrise to sunset1610 Washington Hts, Ann Arbor, MI 48104Free admissionFor all things pretty, head to this 100-year old garden which has the largest collection of Heirloom Peonies in North America. Tree Peonies are the first to bloom here, marking the start of Spring with each flower lasting only a day or two. Then the Herbacious Peonies should stake a claim at the beginning of June, and from then on it's full bloom season with up to 10,000 flowers showing off their petals. Those in the know recommend picking your visiting times, apparently flower color and fragrance are best in the mornings and late afternoon, and the season can wrap up quickly so get a bloom update (from mid-May onwards) before you go.Can't miss flower eventsThe gardens we've mentioned have clubs, lectures, workshops, and flower sales, but Flower Day at Eastern Market on May 20th will also brighten your day. And if you're a bit of green-thumb, another tour in downtown Detroit worth a mention is the Historic Indian Village Home and Gardens tour in June.

Plus the name is pretty catchy! Who wouldn't want a profit 'blast'?"
Daluga, a fourth-generation florist and owner of Department of Floristry in Ann Arbor, returns with "Exceeding the Demands of Today's Gift Givers." Paul Goodman, MBA, CPA, PFCI, president of Floral Finance Business Services and a Floral Management columnist, will present "A Roadmap for Profitable Deliveries" — just in time for Valentine's Day.
Veteran speaker Tim Huckabee, president of FloralStrategies is revamping his Profit Blast presentation to align with his new Floral Management column, "Smart Selling," which includes digital supplements. "This presentation, structured like a workshop, will take the conversation a step further with interactive exercises to start turning owners into better managers," Huckabee said.
New to the Profit Blast stage is Rakini Chinery, AAF, AzMF. The owner of Allan's Flowers in Prescott, Arizona, has shared some of her secrets to success in Floral Management and will now go into more detail with "Driving Local Orders to Your Shop." Participants will learn how to flag local customers in their wire-in orders and then convert them to direct buyers, improve their search engine optimization and break through creative plateaus with social media.
SAF's popular 1-Day Profit Blast is gearing up for three other dates in 2018. Check safnow.org/1-day-profit-blast to see if the can't miss event — packed with design, sales, technology and management education along with a Supplier Showcase — is coming to a city near you!

Dec 29, 2017The Flower Bar: flowers, coffee, pastries and more
Brett Huey said. "We see mostly South Lyon customers, people on their way to Ann Arbor. We get so many cars here that have to stop at the four-way stop (intersection). On the weekends, they say they went by, but were running late."The building also doesn't accommodate a drive-through window, which many coffee-related shops rely on. "We can't have a drive-through, but we want to have people come in so that we can get to know their tastes," Laura Huey said. "Right now, we've just been trying to get the word out that we're open."img itemprop="url" src="https://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/abc24fbd7747a50af62bd39601855788dddef857/c=5-0-4027-3024&r=x408&c=540x405/local/-/media/2017/12/01/MIGroup/Livonia/636477413362792811-SLh.flower-bar-3-2-.JPG" alt="Fresh-cut flowers, even some kale, are offered at the" width="540" heig... "For floral jewelry, I love using young, tight ranunculus, astrantia blooms, hyacinth pips, delphinium florets, huechera foliage, herbs, berries, pods, miniature orchids . to name a few."Floral pieces appreciate a periodic misting but they are made to last for the duration of a one-day event such as a wedding or party, Mcleary said. Succulents can last up to three weeks without watering.Mcleary's designs often center around a single family of colors, adding a variety of shades and textures to boost interest. "Larger blooms and darker shades typically are set down first, and more delicate materials and lighter shades float above," she said. She receives many illustrated thank you notes from former clients — usually brides — for whom she designed succulent jewelry that was successfully re-potted."A favorite photo came on one couple's first anniversary: a pot of overflowing plants, happily nestled in their new home," she said.
