2015 Year In Review: Part One

Makayla Cragg - a 2014 Grayling High School graduate and a three-sport athlete at GHS - attended Alpena Community College, where she planned to play softball for the Lumberjacks. "What I love most about being able to play college athletics is the fact of just having the opportunity to play. A lot of people don't get offered to play at a college level. Having the scholarship that I received is also a bonus and helps out a lot financially," Cragg said.22The Crawford AuSable Schools District's Board of Education officially approved the Extended Learning Year (ELY) program. The new program was offered to parents for their children entering kindergarten through fifth grade. "We are extremely excited to be offering this voluntary option for our students and parents," said Crawford AuSable School District    Superintendent Joe Powers. "Nationwide research has shown that year-round or balanced school calendars greatly improves student achievement." The traditional school year calendar currently has 177 instructional days, while the new ELY calendar will offer 190 instructional days spread throughout the year.Music lovers, hoping to add a patriotic punch to their collection, needed to look no further than "Betty and the Babes," more formally known as the Grayling Promotional Association (GPA) Singers. The GPA Singers released a CD titled "Betty and the Babes" Sing America. Featured on the CD are Betty Bennett, Alice Snyder, Becky Walrath, D.J. Brown, Gail Swope, Judy Clyma, Judy Steffen, Mary Thornsberry, Maureen "Mo"  McNamara, Pat Scmid and Shelly Cohee. The Grayling High School Student Senate members chose the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter as their charity for the year. The students went to the shelter for visits and helped out with multiple projects. The entire class spent a day making blankets for the animals. A penny war was also held to raise money for food and treats. The Crawford County Library Board of Trustees named Connie Meyer as the director for the Crawford County Library System. Meyer grew up in Crawford County and is a 1981 Grayling High School graduate. "I am looking forward to working with the amazing staff, library board and every patron in Crawford County," she said. "It is my mission to continue to provide superior library services and to explore and bring new and exciting services to the people of Crawford County."29The Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan, which included 22 team members, coaches and managers, made a stop at Camp Grayling. Nearly 200 people, including veterans, military families and Grayling High School softball players, attended the event. The Tigers held a question and answer session, when they discussed the upcoming season, players obtained through trades and coming back from injuries and team strategies, and also held a photo session in a classroom building at Camp Grayling.Grayling fly-tyers Terry Warrington and Bill Zadorski held fly-tying classes at the Crawford County Commission on Aging and Senior Center to introduce and reacquaint senior citizens with the art of fly-tying.Grayling Recreation Authority hosted the sixth annual Cote Dame Marie Ski Loppet -  a series of cross country ski races for people of all ages and skill levels - at Hanson Hill...
