Sep 7, 2020Robert Mercer, CEO who helped win Goodyear War, dies at age 96 - Akron Beacon Journal
Robert E. Mercer took Goodyear — and Akron — to war.Mercer, Goodyear’s chairman and chief executive from 1983 to 1989, led the company in its desperate fight against corporate raider Sir James Goldsmith, the billionaire multinational financier who shocked the community with his attempt to buy the company and break it up.Mercer by default became the general over a team of executives and others in what became the Goodyear War, a 10-week battle in 1986 to retain the identity and substance of not just Goodyear but in many ways also of Akron. Goodyear then was the city’s largest employer and rubber, while on the wane, still ran through Akron’s veins. The aftermath in many ways reshaped the city.Mercer, a World War II veteran who worked at Goodyear for 42 years, died on Friday. He was 96 years old.The 1986 war of substance was also a war of words, and Mercer and his lieutenants chose their words carefully and passionately in rallying and uniting people and institutions to the cause against outsider Goldsmith."He wanted to buy i...

Dec 14, 2018Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank looking for holiday boost - The-review
December usually is the month when community support for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank hits its highest level.
But this year there is heightened concern at the food bank because donations of cash and collected food trail 2017 by about 6 percent.
Dan Flowers, president and chief executive officer, isn't sure why donations have slipped, but he hopes the gap can be closed before the year ends.
The agency is in the midst of its annual Holiday Campaign, which hopes to generate donations equal to 7 million meals. A $1 donation to the food bank can provide four meals, while a donation of 1.2 pounds of food is equal to one meal.
Events during the holiday push include the sixth annual Selfless Elf 5K run Dec. 22 and the annual Long Haul Against Hunger, in conjunction with local iHeartMedia radio stations, which last Friday generated enough donations to equal 468,000 meals.
"This is the time of the year when it counts," Flowers said, adding that he hopes communities rally to help.

Jul 27, 2017Khloe Kardashian's 19-year-old Cleveland Florist Continues to Impress
A couple weeks ago, Lynch Design even provided the floral arrangements for a large wedding in Akron. "I can't tell you who that is," Lynch says from his Beachwood studio last week. "But you can look it all up on Instagram." (We did. Seems the wedding was for “Entourage” star, Jerry Ferrara). Running Lynch Designs since 14 (his parents helped him start up the business), Lynch hires employees either in high school or college, no one is over 21.
"It's not that I don't trust people over 21," Lynch says. "It's just more fun working with people my own age." Lynch describes his flower style as clean and full with plenty of big statement pieces. And he's always had the drive to make his designs go far. He sent a bouquet of flowers to Kardashian over Christmas, welcoming her to Cleveland, thinking he'd hear nothing more. But the TV star Snapchatted the bouquet and soon her people were reaching out to Lynch, asking for help on the birthday party. Since that experience, the mostly untrained florist says the exposure has brought the company into the spotlight, and they're booked through the end of the summer. Then it's back to college for the young entrepreneur. "Who knows where this will all go, but it’s so rewarding at the end of the day when you’re with everyone, and you pulled it together and you made something," Lynch says. "It’s as full time as it can be right now. It’s my life."...
