Eleanor Roosevelt's Edward Belsoi claims Prince George's cross-country title; CH Flowers girls sweep

Belsoi got tangled up in a pack of runners soon after the starting gun sounded at the Prince George’s County cross-country championships Wednesday at Fort Washington Park. It wasn’t until after the race was over and Belsoi took off his shoe that he realized his foot had been punctured by another runner’s spikes in the early congestion. “They impaled my foot,” joked Belsoi, who won in 16 minutes 45.93 seconds. Heading into the race, the senior was aiming for closer to the 16-minute mark, but the “sloppy start” combined with a muggy afternoon and a soft, grass-covered course slowed him down a bit. Still, he beat out the rest of the field by more than 45 seconds. Belsoi and High Point senior Daniel Jordan, who finished second in 17:32.36, began battling for the lead shortly after the commotion settled. Around 2,000 meters in, Belsoi started to distance himself. “I threw a lot of surges in so he would back off the pace that I was doing,” Belsoi said. “Then at the one-and-a-half mile mark, there’s a huge downhill, so I used that to really open up my stride and break away from him.” Junior Dennis Miranda-Cruz, Belsoi’s teammate, rounded out the top three with a time of 17:42.31.
