Jul 5, 2019A New Toni Morrison Documentary Gives the World’s Greatest Living Writer Her Flowers, and Plants New Seeds - The Root
Reed. The timing of the retrospective, filmed more than 15 years before the singer passed, allowed Reed and his legendary contemporaries, like David Bowie and Patti Smith, to participate.“You want to do a film about someone when they’re still able to participate in it,” Greenfield-Sanders says. “And I think that that’s what’s so strong here, is that Toni tells her story.”AdvertisementOne technique Greenfield-Sanders uses to foster intimacy between Morrison and the viewer is to let her talk directly to the camera while everyone else talking about her is set at an angle—a nod to the fact that the focus, even when she’s not in the frame, is always on Morrison. There is much in the film for viewers in all stages of Morrison fandom. The most devout Morrison readers will likely be familiar with the criticism she received in the ’70s and ’80s that her work was too concerned with black Americans; she is “is far too talented to remain only a marvelous recorder of the black side of provincial American life” read a New York Times book review of Sula). They’ll also be familiar with Morrison’s fierce and persistent refusal to bow to the white gaze in her work and to defer to white critics, predecessors, and contemporaries.Advertisement“I was more interesting than they were. I knew more than they did. And I wasn’t afraid to show it,” Morrison says in the doc.br...

Lini 910 Labrusca Rosé NV
Lambrusco dell’Emilia, Italy, $16
Lambrusco, a light-bodied, sparkling red, is Italy’s surprise partner to pizza, barbecue and charcuterie. This is the first rosé Lambrusco I’ve tried, and it’s a delight. Flavors of watermelon, strawberry and wild herbs make for a refreshing patio pounder, and if you’re not careful, you may finish it before the food is ready. And there are bubbles! This wine is new to the market, but it should get wider availability, especially if customers aren’t skeptical about trying a pink lambrusco. ABV: 11 percent.Imported and distributed by Winebow: Available in the District at Rodman’s. Available in Maryland at Bradley Food & Beverage in Bethesda, the Perfect Pour in Elkridge.
Domaine Naturaliste Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Wilyabrup, Margaret River, Australia, $30
Winemaker Bruce Dukes has crafted an elegant, plush New World-style cabernet that explodes with ripe flavors of blackberries, currants and blueberries. Even with its fruit-forward flavors, it maintains an Old World sensibility — the oak is beautifully integrated to give structure and tannin to the wine, the alcohol is in check, and there’s a mineral undertone that suggests a fine bordeaux. Pair this with the next large hunk of beef you grill for a summer party. ABV: 14 percent.Imported by Artisans & Vines. Distributed in the District by Hop & Wine, in Maryland by Artisans & Vines, and in Virginia by Hop & Wine and LK Wine Tours & Sales. Available in the District at MacArthur Beverages, Rodman’s. Available in Maryland at Bethesda Co-Op in Cabin John, Bradley Food & Beverage and Georgetown Square Wine and Beer in Bethesda, Finewine.com and the Wine Harvest in Gaithersburg, Takoma Park-Silver Spring Co-Op in Takoma Park. Dec 29, 2017Flowers for Lisa Wires Claiming Crown Jewel
This is a dream for me," he added. "The phone hasn't stopped. I got in this game a long time ago. My father was a jockey years ago, he rode down at Bowie, Timonium, Pimlico, Marlboro—tracks that don't even exist anymore, some of them. I fell in love with horses at a young age but I never thought I'd have the money to own them. I got in a good position in my life and we started claiming horses."The 19th running of the Claiming Crown marked opening day of Gulfstream's championship meet, and record handle on the 11-race program was $11.9 million, up 7% from last year when $11.1 million was wagered. Handle in 2015 was $10.3 million. Handle on the Claiming Crown has gone up every year since Gulfstream began hosting the event in 2012.In the 1 1/8-mile Claiming Crown Jewel, Flowers for Lisa and jockey Paco Lopez took control early and led by a length through fractions of :23.60 and :47.06 for a half-mile. With six furlongs in 1:11.28, he extended his lead to 1 1/2 lengths and then held off Flashy Jewel and Diamond Bachelor in the stretch. The final time was 1:48.76. "I had a little bit of a bad post position, and Navarro told me to do whatever I want. I know we have a bad position, but I know the horse is ready for this race," Lopez said. "I rushed a little out of the gate, but my horse was very responsive and we won in hand."Flashy Jewel put a head in front of Diamond Bachelor for second. Turco Bravo and Capital Letters rounded out the top five in the field of 12. Favored grade 2 winner Gigantic Breeze raced near the rear of the field and finished 11th. The winner returned $35.80, $16.40, and $10 across the board. Bred by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, Flowers for Lisa is out of the winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Indyan Lisa. She now has a re...
