Morden Sunrise: Vivid yellow-orange.• Prairie Joy: Medium pink. Good hedge rose.• Prairie Snowdrift: Creamy white.• Winnipeg Parks: Medium red.• Alexander Mackenzie: Deep red.• Champlain: Dark red.• J.P. Connell: Lemon yellow.• John Cabot: Medium red.• John Davis: Medium pink.• Quadra: Dark red.• Pavement series: Purple, scarlet, white types.• Henry Kelsey: Rosy-red. One of the best climbers.• William Baffin: Rose-pink. Excellent climber.• Ramblin' Red: Red climber.Fall pruning tipsMost rose authorities and research universities recommend against fall pruning of roses, as they tend to survive winter better with all canes intact. In spring, before new growth begins, prune vigorously, removing thin, weak canes and reducing height to 12 inches or less.Modern roses bloom best on vigorous new growth stimulated by pruning, rather than old, woody canes allowed to remain.

Happy birthday Boler: 100s of cute campers in Winnipeg for anniversary gathering

WINNIPEG - Angela Durand sits outside her camper which is decorated to look just like the yellow submarine in the well-known song by The Beatles. In a lawn chair beside the blue-and-yellow 1968 camper painted with pictures of John, Paul, George and Ringo - a little yellow propeller attached to the back - Durand strums her ukulele and sings about the community that's developed around the small moulded fibreglass Boler. article continues below "I bought it. Then I did research on the Boler. Then I became addicted to Bolers," she said. "I love it." Hundreds of the unique trailers have descended on Winnipeg to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Manitoba invention. The Boler camper became famous on highways throughout North America as the "egg on wheels," said event organizer Ian Giles. About 10,000 of the ultralight fibreglass trailers were manufactured and sold between 1968 and 1988. Giles describes it like two bathtubs joined together to form a hollow container. "What i...

Gardening: Signs of spring after 'Winterpeg'

I thought I would remind us why early spring colour brings a greater joy after we have experienced a little taste of Winnipeg weather. The minor bulbs often herald the arrival of spring and if you thought that was a solitary reference to Snowdrops or Galanthus, you would be wrong. There are actually a large number of these reliably perennial bulbs, which form large clumps or drifts over time, including snow crocus, winter aconites and some of the early blooming iris, such as I. danfordiae and Iris reticulata. Eranthis hyemalis (syn. cilicia) is the common winter aconite and the reason you don’t see them in more gardens is that the bulbs are miniscule and often overlooked for the larger tulips and daffodils. Which is a shame, because once established, they form substantial drifts of bright yellow flowers that open in the sun and are encircled with a collar of green bracts, as shown in my good friend Judy’s Dover Street garden. This same bulb size prejudice also seems to apply to snow crocus, which are passed by for the much larger Dutch crocus (C. vernus) corms – with the latter often falling over with a little rain or light snow. On the other hand, Crocus chrysanthus or snow crocus form large colonies of smaller-flowered stems, which hold up really well in adverse weather. There is also quite a diversity of colour choice within this group, including ‘Blue Pearl’ (pale lavender), ‘Snow Bunting’ (white), ‘Goldilocks’ (yellow), ‘Ladykiller’ (purple / white), ‘Orange Monarch’, ‘Cream Beauty’ (creamy yellow) and ‘Zwanenburg Bronze’ (gold with bronze streaks). I think the early blooming iris are another overlooked spring bulb with a lot of colour potential, a few common varieties include I. danfordiae (yellow) and reticulata types such as ‘Cantab’ (pale blue), J.S. Dyt (deep purple) and ‘Harmony’ (rich blue). There are two new Iris r... (Maple Ridge News)

Gardening: The great Canadian plant

Adelaide Hoodless’ (bright red 1964), ‘Morden Blush’ (pale pink 1976), ‘Winnipeg Parks’ (deep pink 1981) and ‘Hope for Humanity’ (burgundy-red 1984). For those of you hoping to grow that great Canadian plant, but with limited growing space, I suggest you contact the Pitt Meadows Community Garden at pmcg.ca and secure one of the many 15-by-15’ plots available. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author (hebe_acer@hotmail.com). Fall colors greet Headwaters 100 riders this Saturday

Hosted by the Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club, the biking event celebrates its 36th anniversary this Saturday, Sept. 24. Bicyclists from Winnipeg, Fargo, Grand Rapids and the Twin Cities join local and regional riders for a 100-, 75- or 45-mile tour of northern Minnesota's fall colors. About 70 volunteers will help serve food or act as SAG (support and gear) drivers to aid bicyclists with trouble on the road, such as flat tires or First Aid. "The volunteers who put this ride on are passionate about making it a great experience for our riders, who come from all over North America," said Shannon Barnett, an Itascatur member helping with this year's ride. As of Monday afternoon, 368 people had registered. Many wait for an accurate weather forecast before registering, Barnett noted. The National Weather Service is predicting mostly cloudy skies with a high near 61 Saturday. As of Monday, there was a 50 percent chance of showers. The Headwaters 100 is a casual, non-competitive and family-friendly ride. At one time, the event had a race component along with the ride. Itascatur discontinued the race in 2009. "There are many others who work this ride and make it the positive experience that it has become for our regi... (Park Rapids Enterprise)
