Gardens of Love: Carol Brush

Road in late fall.Carol arrived on the Island one summer 45 years ago, started a cheese shop, and never returned to college. She moved her shop from Vineyard Haven to Edgartown, then opened a second shop before starting a restaurant. She met her husband George Brush in 1978, and has never regretted the path her life has taken. Before building their home 30 years ago, she and George lived on their sailboat and rented out their house, so when they moved to terra firma, she did not want to put a vegetable garden in — only a small planting area — a little garden.Carol grew up in Andover, and said to me: “You remember ‘The Addams Family’? That was my family. We had Lurch, a Victorian house, and I just liked getting dirt under my fingernails.” Carol did not have a garden growing up, but ever since she arrived on-Island, she’s had “a little garden.” There are two side-by-side garden areas, one started when they built their home, and the expanded garden area, which was created about seven years ago. As anyone who works all the time knows, “the garden suffers,” Carol continued, “so what I learned about gardening is to change,” as she points to one raised bed. “This was garlic last season, so I pulled the garlic in July and then I put in my Marvel of Venice beans. Then I took that crop out and I put in some winter squash. Not many grew, so I pulled it all out ... (Martha's Vineyard Times)

Robert A. Lunbeck

Chilmark Fire Department.   Steadfast in his Catholic faith, Bob worshiped regularly at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Vineyard Haven. Bob’s greatest pride was his family; nothing gave him more pleasure than time with his children and grandchildren. For many years, from all over the country they streamed to Martha’s Vineyard to share with him his favorite places and activities, including Lucy Vincent Beach and Menemsha, sailing, canoeing, walks, cycling, clamming, Scrabble and spirited dinner discussions. Every visit was laced with Bob’s hospitality, warmth, and humor. Bob and Barbara were inseparable, completely devoted to each other, and the best of companions.   Several years ago Bob and Barbara moved back to the Philadelphia area, joining many decades-long friends at Shannondell in Audubon. They continued to spend summers on Martha’s Vineyard.   He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (nee Callanan), his children and their spouses, Elizabeth (Gary Gerstle), Robert Jr. (Kathleen), James (Julia Reid), Peggy Montague (Richard), John (Muyar) and Martha (Mike Brown) and grandchildren, Daniel and Samuel Gerstle; Natalie and Robert (III) Lunbeck; Emma, John and Axel Lunbeck; William, Tess, and Kate Montague; Alexandra and Victoria Lunbeck; and Maggie and Molly Brown. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, William Paul Lunbeck.   A funeral mass will be held 10 am, Saturday, January 30, at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1260 South Trooper Road, Norristown, PA 19403, followed by a celebration of Bob’s life at the Ashcroft Clubhouse, 10000 Shannondell Dr, Audubon, PA 19403 for family and friends. Special thanks to Einstein Montgomery Hospice for exemplary care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Bob’s name to Martha’s Vineyard Museum at PO Box 1310, Edgartown, MA 02539 or mvmuseum.org. Share this: Related ... (Martha's Vineyard Times)
