Leominster’s downtown seasonal explosion of floral color is a labor of love supported by the community - Sentinel & Enterprise

Paul Cavicchio Jr. of Cavicchio Greenhouses Inc., which is located in Sudbury, made a financial donation to help with the landscaping. The city used that donation to begin the process of purchasing the plants needed to beautify downtown. To keep everything looking green and colorful, a Recreation Department crew member waters everything growing every day of the week, using up to 1,400 gallons of water each day. With Larry Emby manning the water truck, Sallie Poirier waters the flowers in downtown. Monday through Friday, beginning at 6 a.m., its Poirier and Larry Emby who can be seen driving a green pick-up with a 200-gallon water tank in its bed stopping to water each flowered area. Emby said last week that when people see them out with the water truck, they know spring is on the way. “People just love it,” Emby said, which was echoed by Mazzarella, who said: “Our goal was to ‘wow’ everybody, and I think we do.” Mazzarella said that hardly a day goes by during the spring and summer where he doesn’t get comments from city residents and those traveling through about the beauty of the landscaping. “It is overwhelming and everybody notices it,” he said. Currently the city pays for the staff and the operation of the water truck, but he hopes that at some point the program will be entirely funded by private donations. In fact, included in the city’s water bills is a separate request for donations to the flower fund. Sallie Poirier is shown watering the NationalGriid sponsored island that is directly in front of Monument Square. City Grant Administrator Wendy Wiiks said nearly every day when a resident comes to City Hall to pay their water bill, they will walk into the Mayor’s office to make a donation to the fund. “It’s the greatest thing,” Wiiks said. While perhaps not obvious, over the past sever...
