Facing last Christmas in Boston, Flower Exchange looks to bloom anew in Chelsea

With flower stores in the South End and South Boston, Yianni Tsaousidis, the owner of Stapleton Floral Design, said he thinks nothing of shooting over to the exchange several times a day because it’s so close. He won’t be able to do that once the exchange moves to Chelsea. “We’ll try to get everything we need in one trip instead of making multiples now,” Tsaousidis said. “But the good thing is that we’re still going to have a flower exchange. Former Brockton councilor dies at age 59

Coffin was first a master electrician, before transitioning to a career as a machine technician for Cushman and Wakefield, based in South Boston. Coffin’s family said he died while at work, where his job was to maintain and fix machines for FedEx. Page 2 of 2 - “Any issue they would have on site that was mechanical, or if a conveyor belt often broke, he was the person they would call and figure out what was wrong,” Dowling said. “My dad really liked to figure out machines and computers. This was a strong interest of his, to tinker and figure out how things work. He didn’t mind getting dirty. It was the perfect job for him.” Councilor-At-Large Winthrop Farwell, who served as mayor from 1992 to 1995, praised Coffin for his engaging nature and his efforts to fight for resources as an elected official, during a difficult time for the city as it bounced back from a serious budget deficit that required a financial control board. “He took the time to sit down with you,” Farwell said. “He’s the kind of guy you would want to represent a ward of city government. ... He worked hard to preserve the programs and services that were so essential to this city.” Farwell, 68, said he was shocked to hear the news of the younger Coffin’s death. “It really is too bad,” Farwell said. “I have many, many good memories.” Former Brockton Mayor Jack Yunits, who was also in office during Coffin’s time on the city council, remembered him for his passion. “He was certainly a spirited guy,” Yunits said. “He had a huge passion for what he did, and he was sharp. He went to the beat of a different drum sometimes, but you could always talk to him.” Late last year, Coffin moved to Taunton to be closer to his other two younger daughters, Hayley and Morgan Coffin, who live in Lakeville, according to Dowling. Coffin also had a stepson, Spencer Petitti. “He was a very hard worker,” Dowling said. “He believed in old pastimes, the art of conversation, getting a cup of coffee with a friend and going to the barber shop. He was young, but he had an old soul.” Instead of flowers, the family of Coffin is asking for donations to be made to the Founders Affiliate of the American Heart Association, at P.O. John Diggin, Jr., 68

John J. Diggin, Jr., 68, died at home in Rochester on Dec. 13 after a vicious battle with cancer. John was born in South Boston, the son of the late John J. and Alice (Hartnett) Diggin Sr., and spent most of his childhood in Dorchester. John also lived in Mansfield, Cambridge and Braintree before retiring and splitting his time between Rochester, Rose Point in West Wareham and Cape Coral, Florida. After high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a military policeman in Vietnam and in Korea, at one time stationed on the DMZ during the Pueblo Crisis. John attended Boston College nights while working for the Boston School Department as a custodian. He graduated from Boston College in 1975 with a bachelor’s in history. He went on to be president of the Boston Schoolhouse Custodians Union and then moved up to supervisor and was the day manager for the Boston School’s Facilities Department. He retired in 2002 after 38 years of working for the city of Boston.
