Cemetery subcommittee hears citizens' concerns about gravesite decorations at Tuesday meeting

Deborah Allard Herald News Staff Reporter @debsallard FALL RIVER — The types of flowers — silk, real, annual or perennial — along with planters, solar lights, and other gravesite decorations were a topic of discussion at the Cemetery Sub-Committee meeting Tuesday night.The three-member group formed from the Board of Park Commissioners is tasked with looking at cemetery rules and regulations to be added, kept or discarded at the historic Oak Grove Cemetery and North Burial Ground, and other smaller city cemeteries.About a dozen concerned citizens came out to give their ideas and opinions.Husband and wife Tom and Charlene Khoury were concerned about her parents’ planter, which had been removed during a sweep of those items in the fall of last year at Oak Grove.“All of a sudden on a political decision, it gets removed from us,” Tom Khoury said.“What are you going to do with it?” Charlene Khoury asked the group.Member Jason Caminiti said the Historical Commission was handling the issue of what can be done with the planters.Member Kristen Cant... Robert Hillman, 78; key player in global expansion of local law firm

Wright brothers’ airplanes employed only 11 attorneys. Mr. Hillman, a Fall River native whose parents were Jewish Latvian immigrants, soon became the architect of an expansion plan far exceeding founder Frederick Perry Fish’s dreams, when the firm began in 1878. During Mr. Hillman’s career, Fish & Richardson grew to a global powerhouse with 350 attorneys, 12 offices, and a wall of current accolades from the legal press proclaiming the firm one of the hottest and busiest in intellectual property law. “He had the personality of a builder and no matter where he worked, he would have been concocting a vision of how to build and grow,” said his colleague David L. 195 Things: Procession of flowers a feast for the eyes and soul

FALL RIVER — It may be that a major part of heaven is walking among flowers. But that’s speculation. If it is true, then maybe the processions held during the annual feast at St. Michael’s Church give us a better idea of what heaven is like. What some of St. Michael’s parishioners do is affix flower petals to the middle of the streets in the neighborhood around the church. It’s old Europe, the place where a great number of Fall Riverites can trace their ancestry, so it’s a history lesson that hits home. You could have seen the same thing in 13th-century Portugal, just as you could have seen the same kind of procession and feast. That’s nearly enough. But, in addition, it’s beautiful. 195 Things: Virgin Mary in the bathtub a cultural touchstone

FALL RIVER — The Virgin Mary statue, often placed inside an old bathtub, is one of those “Fall River things” about which people make jokes. “Mary on the half shell” is one of the most frequent jokes, though that quip lost its “ha ha” many decades ago. There are a great number of them in Fall River neighborhoods, though far fewer than there were in the years when Portuguese immigration was running high. Often now, you’ll see a neglected Mary in the corner of a yard, the house having been sold by the children of the owner who made the shrine. The shrines vary a good deal, too. There’s the simple Virgin Mary statue in an old bathtub, the inside of the tub painted blue, the outside painted white. There are the shrines that eschew the tub for a grotto built of stone. There are the shrines that include a couple of stone lambs, the concrete praying children, all the aspects of the miracle at Fatima.
