A perennial favorite, MFA's 'Art in Bloom' is a fusion of flowers and art
It brings in many people who might not otherwise come to the museum,” said Stacey Weaver of Cohasset, who previously led the volunteer corps who create the event. “It’s a celebration of spring, and the combination of the creativity of the arrangers and the artists is an exceptional experience.”
While visitors can follow a map to find the 52 arrangements, a tour is the best way to experience the festival. Eight different tours run simultaneously and continuously, stopping at paintings, sculpture and decorative objects throughout the museum.
“You can join whenever you want and when you finish one loop, you can do another,” said Weaver, who will lead a tour. “Each tour has one guide who talks about the art and another who talks about the flowers.”
Since her first Art in Bloom 10 years ago, Weaver has delighted in the museum’s overnight transformation.
“It like a beautiful minuet,” said Weaver, 69, a retired institutional investment advisor who also volunteers at the Scituate Animal Shelter. “It’s like the fairy godmother came and anointed the pedestal with a wand and the flowers automatically appear.”
Of course, what’s invisible to the public are the hundreds of hours the MFA Associates – a corp of volunteers who receive extensive training and commit to serve for four years – spend organizing and executing the event.
Around 6 a.m. Friday, the arrangers – all garden club members – will arrive at the museum with drop cloths, trimmers, water, and, of course, flowers, purchased the day before at the wholesale Boston Flower Exchange. Their interpretations are literal, abstract and somewhere in between.
