Mass. Lawmaker Used Campaign Funds for Golf, Rental Cars, Flowers for Girlfriend: FBI - NBC10 Boston

The FBI Boston said state Rep. David Nangle, a Democrat who represents parts of Chelmsford and Lowell, was arrested by FBI and IRS special agents at his home in Lowell on Tuesday morning. He faces dozens of charges, including defrauding a bank and tax fraud. U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling said in a news conference that Nangle tried to hide the illegal campaign expenditures by buying gift cards supposedly for his staff and then using them for his own expenses. "It is safe to say that Rep. Nangle has violated the public trust," Lelling said. Nangle, 59, had no comment as he walked out of Boston's federal courthouse. Nangle, who was heavily in debt, allegedly deceived campaign authorities by using an acquaintance as a straw campaign vendor who was paid for false services and gave the money back to Nangle, according to Lelling. Nangle was allegedly an extensive gambler who used the campaign funds to cover golf club dues, rental cars to get to and from casinos, flowers for his girlfriend, gas, hotels and restaurants, Lelling said. Affable florist Henry Sykes fondly remembered

Sykes the Florist T-shirt and standing at a counter surrounded by photos of the family. "He loved having the people come in." Sykes was born in North Chelmsford as one of six children. The family moved to Lowell when Sykes was young, and he attended the Riverside School and Lowell High School, where he graduated in 1945. He followed his older brothers into the military, serving in the Navy for about nine months, until the war came to an end. "The story goes, they heard another Sykes was coming, so they called off the war," Laurel said. Sykes' father had a greenhouse, and he took up flowers as a hobby when he was a kid. Opening his own business seemed to be a natural fit. Sykes met his wife, Beverly Laurin, at Fellowship Methodist Church just down the street. They married in 1949; Beverly died in 2012. The couple raised four children together: Three daughters, all named after flowers, Laurel, Heather and Holly, and son Darren. The Sykes had 11 grandchildren. One granddaughter, Hillary Millett, gave a eulogy, recalling his kindness toward others, such as buying meals for strangers in restaurants, and his excitement at seeing his grandchildren. "Whenever we walked into any room," she said, "Grampa would throw his hands out to his side and sing, 'There she is, Miss America!," and give a tight hug and kiss. While Laurel and Darren now run the business, Heather owns Wayside Florist in Concord with her husband, Wayne Busa. Ironically, Holly is allergic to flowers and became a math teacher. "I always knew I'd work in the business," Darren said. He described his attitude about it, simply, as "it's what we're going to do." Sykes had a comfort zone and he liked it there. He grew up a stone's throw away from the shop on Rockingham Street, and later moved into a home on the other side of the business. After his time in the service, he left New England only one other time, to visit an old friend's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. Laurel convinced him to make the trip by noting that it was a chance to bring some flowers for his friend's grave. Sykes was a selfless man who earned accolades for his volunteer work and board service for several city groups, including the Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army and Masonic Lodge. His extended family included a broad range of people over the decades who he met either through the shop, church or athletics leagues. Bob Anderson, a 72-year-old Tewksbury resident, met Sykes playing softball and bowling and despite an age difference, they easily took to each other. "Henry was like a father to me," he said. Hindu temple rises in Groton to meet growing community

This is Thursday at the New England Shirdi Sai Parivaar Temple in Chelmsford, a holy day for the Hindu followers of the guru Shri Sai Baba, the equivalent of Sunday for Christians, Friday for Muslims, or Saturday for Jews. But today is also Makar Sankranti, a children’s festival that honors the sun, reminding everyone that the days are growing longer, the pitch-black nights are shortening, and spring is on the way. About 300 worshippers have traveled from across town and from nearby Westford, Acton, Boxborough, Lowell, Shrewsbury, Lexington, and Nashua to attend the 8 p.m. service and community meal that follows — not an easy feat on a weekday evening for working parents and their children.
