Get your holiday plants ready

Some options to consider are Leyland Cypress and Arizona Cypress. If you live in the Elgin-Bastrop area then the Afghan Pine is a good choice. It will grow west of that area, but will not grow quite as strong because of our alkaline soil. Hollies and asparagus fern are two other outdoor plants that look pretty when decorated for winter and are then planted in the landscape. Just make sure you give them even water while still in the containers, and remove any decorative sleeves that prevent water from draining (or punch holes in the bottom). If you’re looking for a permanent indoor or porch tree, then the Norfolk Island pine can be a nice addition that you can decorate for Christmas and then use as a centerpiece of your indoor greenery for the next year. Rosemary Christmas trees are always available this time of year and many people buy them for centerpieces in their home. However,W there is a problem with this: rosemary absolutely has to be in the sun and will crash if kept inside for more than a few days (at most). But in a sunny spot on the porch it will thrive and then you can plant it as a full sun, evergreen anchor piece in your landscape after Christmas. Greenery on your porch can also add to your outdoor decorations and looks beautiful when it’s decked out in lights and ribbons. A native of Mexico, poinsettias have been an important part of the Christmas tradition in that country for nearly 500 years. Brought into the United States in the mid-19th century, we have enjoyed their colorful bracts in our homes each December now for generations.  Poinsettias are typically grown for the holidays and... Moms and mementos: The Mother's Day to remember

Mother’s Day in 1958 by my oldest daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Forman Coxe. Becky was 6 years old and in the first grade in Bastrop. I am now 86 and Becky is 63, and the recipes in it are still used often. — Carol Forman, of Baker There are three treasured gifts I always kept on my desk at work and, now retired, at home. During my workday as a young working mom, I could look at the pencil holders and be assured that my children, Gene Settoon age 6 in 1992, now 30; and Christine Settoon, age 6 in 1995, now 27; were happy in their first year at St. Philip Neri. They each came home with their kindergarten project so very proud. When they would visit my office they noticed their gift on my desk and beamed when a coworker would admire their artwork! The “Mom” rock was painted by my daughter at about the same age during a craft lesson from her Granny, my mother Dolores Dollar, and reminds me that parents are the “rock” for their children all of their lives. — Debbie Settoon, of Kenner ••••• My son Graham made this cut-out card when he was in grade school — probably about first or second grade. He is left-handed and you will see from the inside of the card that it opens from the left. You will see from oldest son Greer’s card, it opens to the right and, rather than a cut-out, he drew a teddy bear, cut it out and pasted it on top of the card. The cards are unique, so different and special, as are my sons. I keep the cards taped to my bathroom mirror. Graham is now 20 and a freshman at LSU. Greer is now 21 and a senior at LSU. — Lisa Gardner, of Baton Rouge ••••• I love being a mom just to get these gems! — Cheri Olinde, of St. Amant, says of the pictures colored by 6-year-old son Bryson ••••• This is one of my favorite drawings by my daughter Emmy Miller (age 13). She gave me it to me last year for Mother’s Day when she was 12. It is very special to me for several reasons. First, you can see the thoughtfulness and effort she put into it, w... (The Advocate)

Looking for wildflowers in 20 steps

New Braunfels. 12. Again, nothing spectacular to report. Flowers were supposed to be a sight to behold southwest of Austin. 13. So they went to Bastrop, Brenham, LaGrange and back to Bastrop. 14. After watching the severe weather reports, they decided to head home. 15. But not before they made "the required trip to Fredericksburg," Marge said. 16. "Wildseed Farm was gorgeous, as usual," she added. 17. They chose to come home on U.S. 87, and when they got to Mason the wildflower show began! 18. "If anyone wants to see bluebonnets, now is the time," Marge said. 19. The drive Between Mason and Brady put the rest of their trip to shame, Marge said. "Pretty much solid blues, yellows and reds were on both sides of the road and in the median all the way from Mason to Brady." 20. "The drive from Brady to Mason is worth (it) for anyone," Marge said. But, she added, "I wouldn't wait too long. I think they are at their peak." ... (San Angelo Standard Times)
