Team targets pond-shore weed that's crowding out rare plants in Plymouth

Sims opens Smith House Floral & Events in Hartford

When Scott David Sims was growing up in Beaver Dam, his grandmother, Dorothy Smith, encouraged him to use his creative talents. "Scott always was kind of artsy," said his mother Sheila Sims, of Beaver Dam. "He has very good ideas. "My mother liked to draw and make things with Scott," Sheila Sims said. He created things from paper and tin cans, she said. "He's always had a gift for art." On Saturday, he revealed some of his talent at Smith House Floral & Events in downtown Hartford. He named the shop after his grandmother who died in 2008. Prior to the grand opening, Sims caught the attention of Hartford residents by decorating his front window with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and photos of children that had been taken years ago with the late Homer Crume, who played Santa for many years. Sims had gathered photos and had them enlarged for the store display, which has mannequins dressed in Homer and Evelyn Crume's Christmas clothes that hadn't been seen by the public in more than 25 years.
