'Holland' wows attendees at Flower Show

In the center of the main exhibition room, Maya Monroe, 6, of Overbrook Park, peered over a wooden bridge railing onto a bed of white tulips, green grass, and a waterway. It was the Lamberton Elementary kindergartner's first show, as it was for her mom, Dana Monroe. "The displays are beautiful," the mother said as a less-enthused Maya, butterfly wand in hand, said she was tired and wanted to go home.Maya's grandmother, Susie Young, said this year's show gave her ideas on planting succulents and sedum in the front yard of her North Wales home. "These are plants you can't kill," she said with a laugh, confessing she's not the best gardener.A short distance away, at the entrance of the Ecodome exhibit, one person after another stepped into giant yellow clogs decorated with a circular swirl of orange and red while a friend or family member took a photo."I thought it was playful," said Jennifer Gubernick, of Bryn Mawr, after she stepped out of the clogs. The graphic designer, who works at an events company, said she liked this year's "broad" theme over something "kitschy" like 2015's show, which featured Disney characters.Walking into the Ecodome, a 3,500-square-foot, igloo-shaped exhibit featuring Dutch-grown plants and showcasing the Netherlands' sustainable technologies, Susan Kane spotted people sitting in what looked like a basket in the middle of the exhibit. "Oh, look!" she exclaimed to her friend Jennifer Lynn. "That's what we are in! A hot-air balloon!""That's spectacular, really," Kane said. The two friends from Mercer County, N.J., wore green shamrock stickers on their cheeks to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. They originally planned to take SEPTA's Regional Rail into Philadelphia, but gave up after spending about an hour at the West Trenton station and hearing multiple announcements about delays. (SEPTA was experiencing overhead-power issues in the early morning, which caused delays on Regional Rail lines.)Kane and Lynn ended up driving into Philadelphia, even giving a ride to a stranger, who was also waiting at the train station and on the way to the Flower Show. For those who needed a rest, a few chairs in the Ecodome proved popular."They should have more," said Anna Wojnarowska, enjoying the view from an orange plastic chair. "It would be lovely if they had more seats like this in this beautiful spot."Wojnarowska, who lives in Manhattan, takes landscape classes at the New York Botanical Garden. (Philly.com (blog))

On Stage: West Chester's Jones looking to make break out

I grew up in a musical family,” said Jones, during a phone interview last week from her home in West Philadelphia. “We lived in Overbrook and then moved to West Chester because my dad is a professor at West Chester University. I played classical music in high school. I also studied classical music at Vassar where I was a major in Latin American Studies. “I travelled to a lot of Latin American countries in Central and South America but there’s no Latin influence in my music. I love Latin American music but it’s not something that feels like me — like it comes from me.” Jones’ music has its own vibe — fresh, smart and totally original. “After I graduated, I moved to Philly and started making music,” said Jones. “I was in a band called Buried Beds for many years. I played in a few other bands and was a touring member of Strand of Oaks.” When Jones decided to make her solo album, she called on her musical buddies from the Quaker City. The album was recorded and produced by Brian McTear, Nick Krill and David Hartley. The stellar group of musicians on the album included Jones on keyboard and guitar, Dave Hartley (Nightlands, The War On Drugs) on bass and guitar, Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) on drums, Patrick Berkery on drums, Brian McTear on guitar, and Nick Krill (Teen Men, Spinto Men) on guitar. “It was important to know the musicians and what they would bring to the table — and to have musicians that I trusted,” said Jones. “I feel very lucky to have worked with these guys. “I recorded half of the album at Brian McTear’s Miner Street Studio in Philly and half at Mount Slippery, which is Dr. Dog’s studio in Upper Darby. I made the album over the course of the last year-and-a-half — in between tours.” Jones has been on the road a lot with Grace Potter. “I finished the album when I was on tour with Grace Potter,” said Jones. “I played the album for Grace and she asked me to open for her on her last tour. I’m also in her band. With Grace, I play keyboards and sing backup vocals. Even though Jones’ music is quite different from Potter’s high-energy sound, she still has been a hit with Potter’s audiences. “When people ask me what my music is like, I describe it as mystical pop music,” said Jones. “One of my biggest influences is Kate Bush. But, I have a lot of influences ... (The Unionville Times)

New park might bloom on Radebaugh Florist property

Marks said he thinks the acquisition would be the first in the Towson area since the county purchased the land for Overbrook Park in 1992. "There aren't many place like this" in the area, Marks said. Marks also said that a developer was interested in building townhouses on the site. Marks said he doesn't know who the developer was, but that he spoke in recent months with the real estate broker and made it known that he preferred that the property remain as open space. If the contract is approved, "I think this [land] becomes a very nice pocket park," Marks said. "We're very happy," said Paul Hartman, vice president of the Aigburth Manor Association of Towson, a community group, and past president of the Greater Towson Council of Community Associations. "We've been hoping for this since we heard that [the florist was] thinking about selling part of their property." Hartman said residents don't want a dense housing project in their "old and well-established neighborhood," but that the site would make a good park or recreation athletic field. He thinks it might be too small to fit a field, but would be fine as green space. Marks said he thinks the contract will be approved and that a park would represent a "legacy" left by the Radebaugh family, whose florist business has been in Towson since 1924. "I am very pleased to be able to add more passive open space in Towson," Kamenetz said in the press release. In April, Kamenetz announced a $4.2 million project to expand the Courthouse Gardens to Patriot Plaza between the Historic Courthouse and the Towson Courts building. "Adding this [Radebaugh] space to the recently announced expansion of the Courthouse Gardens provides residents with two very nice areas to enjoy with family and friends right in the heart of Towson, and represents an investment of over $5 million for new parks in downtown Towson," Kamenetz said.
