Oct 10, 2019Minneapolis musical mentor and ‘mad scientist’ Ed Ackerson dies at 54 - St. Paul Pioneer Press
Ackerson wrote.

A Stillwater native, Ackerson established himself as a musician with a love of new wave, British rock, psychedelia, the Beatles and the Beach Boys. In the ’90s, he played in numerous local bands, while focusing on working as a producer and a sound engineer at First Avenue. At the end of the decade, he bought a former greenhouse and flower shop in Uptown and turned it into Flower Studios, which also served as his home.
Minneapolis musician Mallman first met Ackerson at a party in the ’90s.
“He was my mentor,” Mallman said. “He taught me about mixing, he taught me about engineering. Part of almost every one of my albums was recorded at his studio and three were mixed completely by Ed. He was interested in music and people. He liked people and everybody liked him.”
Ackerson’s band Polara released its self-titled debut album in 1995 on local label Twin/Tone and quickly earned national attention. A major label bidding war followed and Polara signed with Interscope Records, then-home to Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt and the Wallflowers.

“We basically went in and told them what we told every other label which was, we can produce our own records,” Ackerson said in 1997 interview with the Pioneer Press. “We’ve proved that. People pay me to produce records so I should be able to do my own records. And we basically want to be able to call the shots on everything, the creative side from top to bottom. We would just like (Interscope) to put out our records when we’re finished with them.”
Polara went on to release an EP and two albums on Interscope, but lost the contract after a major shake up at the label. Still, Polara established Ackerson on a national level. He went on to produce and/or engineer albums for everyone from Clay Aiken to Joseph Arthur to the Kinks’ Dave Davies. Hundreds of acts recorded music at Flower Studios over the years, including Lizzo, Brian Setzer, Hippo Campus, Craig Finn, Metro Station, Juliana Hatfield, Grant Hart and Rhett Miller.
In 2006, the Replacements reunited to record a pair of new songs for a Rhino Records compilation and asked Ackerson to produce. The band worked with him again on 2013’s “Songs for Slim,” a benefit for Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who had suffered a stroke.
“I’ve known Paul (Westerberg) and Tommy (Stinson) forever, so I think they feel comfortable working at Flowers,” Ackerson told City Pages in 2013. “They like to work fast, capture the moment and spirit, and our studio is designed to make that sort of thing happen easily. … With a great band, the best approach is often to let the energy develop naturally and make sure the technical aspects are invisible to the players.”
Soul Asylum recorded their 2012 album “Delayed Reaction” at Flowers Studio. “I love Ed and loved working with him,” said former Soul Asylum guitarist Daniel Murphy. “He made everyone around him more concise and really ran a great studio, where fun and ease and productivity were king.”

Over the past decade, Ackerson focused on raising his 4-year-old daughter Annika and making music as BNLX with his wife. BNLX’s “LP” featured a photo of the family’s late dog Wiggy on its cover. “We started thinking about it and Wiggy is kind of like another band member,” Ackerson said in a 2012 Pioneer Press interview. “Beyond maybe an hour, he was with us literally every minute we wrote and recorded everythin...
Oct 26, 2018The real dirt: More composite flowers for Butte County gardens
This plant attracts butterflies, bees and birds to the garden, and it is generally not bothered by pests.
Gumweed
Grindelia camporum is a yellow-flowering native known as Great Valley gumplant or gumweed because the flower heads and leaves are coated with a sticky residue created by the plant. It is a gangly perennial up to six feet tall, but dies back in the winter to a basal rosette of leaves.
It flowers from May to late October or early November, providing color and wildlife food through the summer and autumn months. It likes full sun, and will grow in salty, alkaline, or clay soil. Gumplant is great for a dry border, or to create meadow-like drifts in an informal (wild) garden. Propagation is easiest from seed.
Gumplant is a traditional Native American medicinal plant and a major bird and insect magnet. It tolerates deer.
Helianthus
Helianthus maximiliani is a sunflower. It is native to the central and southwestern United States, and is therefore well-suited to our dry climate. It is a persistent rhizome-forming perennial which forms clumps three-feet wide and can reach a height of up to ten feet in a garden.
The yellow three-inch wide flowers appear in late summer and bloom until mid-autumn. It thrives in well-drained soil and bright sunshine.
Apply one inch of water every week during spring and summer to the base of the plant. Pinch one inch from stem tips to promote bushy growth and flower production throughout the season. Stake tall plants to keep the clump upright. Cut back after flowering. Propagate from rhizomes or seeds.
The flowers of Helianthus maximiliani can be cut to bring inside; they also dry well. Young growth on these plants is attractive to slugs, but rabbits and deer steer clear.
Native Americans traditionally utilized these plants for food, dye, oil, thread and to repel mosquitoes. Butterflies and bees gather the pollen and songbirds love the abundant seeds.
