Cooper junior Flowers 17th at state powerlifting meet, Snyder duo medals

Marisol Pulido placed first in the Class 5A 148-pound class with a total of 940 pounds, followed by teammate Lizeth De la Fuente at 935. Conroe Caney Creek's Bre Haesche was third with a total of 915 pounds.In the 4A meet, Biggers placed second in the 165-pound class and Avila was third in the 132 class.Biggers lifted 400 in the squat, 175 in the bench and 405 in the deadlift to finish with a three-lift total of 980 pounds — 140 behind winner Kiana Lopez of Crystal City.Avila, meanwhile, had a 350-pound squat, a 185-pound bench and a 315-pound deadlift for an 850-pound total. That left her behind only Victoria Ortega of Rio Hondo (875) and Alvarado's Isabella Weatherby (885) in her class.Other Big Country qualifiers include Big Spring's Serenity Garcia (14th in the 123 class, 695), Brownwood's Victoria Sanchez (12th in the 132 class, 715), Big Spring's Carlie Roberts (6th in the 181 class, 895) and Stephenville's Nadine Arredondo (8th in the 259 class, 930).Snyder placed eighth as a team with eight points, 13 behind first-place Beeville Jones and second-place Crystal City. Another round of applause to the donors who have helped make another Girls State year possible for three girls from Huntington High School. What a difference being a Girls State or Boys State Citizen makes as these young people prepare for college or prepare their resumes for future employment. The simple mention of being a Girls or Boys State Citizen has had a major impact on many who have gone on to become doctors, lawyers or have chosen some form of government in their career. At this one-week session they learn about government (not politics), how it works and they actually sit in on a session at the Capitol in Austin one day. Attention all female veterans. ROUNDUP: The Woodlands tops Kingwood in District 16-6A

Livingston 33, Caney Creek 30 The Lady Panthers had a couple late opportunities to tie the game but couldn’t get a good shot off. Esme Medniola led Caney Creek with eight points. The Lady Panthers fall to 0-9 in District 18-5A. GIRLS SOCCER The Woodlands 3, Mansfield 2 The Woodlands pulled out a 3-2 win over Mansfield on the second day of the Governor’s Cup in Georgetown Friday. Sommer Stanley put the Lady Highlanders up 1-0 with a goal off a free kick in the 12th minute. Grace Piper made it 2-0 with a header and Kate McCullough scored her sixth goal of the season off a corner to make it a 3-1 game. Mansfield rallied to make it 3-2 in the second half, but The Woodlands held on for the win. The Lady Highlanders are 1-0-1 for the weekend and will play the reigning state champions Coppell Saturday. BOYS SOCCER John Tyler 3, Oak Ridge 1 Logan Aucoin tied the game at 1-1 with his goal in the second half before the Lions scored two unanswered goals for the win. The War Eagles continue the Lufkin Showcase Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Beaumont Westbrook. (Your Houston News)

Ivins, reported, “Punxsutawney Phil's forecast is crazy! I am still hoping for snow. Then again, what do you expect? Phil is a groundhog, after all. Caney Creek Wine owner Rebecca Gayle said, “I hope he is wrong!!” Crockett's Terri Brown Meadows said snow is on its way, eventually. “I think he's wrong, because I have asked God for snow, and I'm expecting to see some!” Former Grapeland resident Jonathan Miles, who now resides in Little Rock, Ark., said, “Punxsutawney Phil for Prez 2016!” Palestine lawyer and roving photographer Stuart Whitaker said, “I'm with the groundhog; it's an early spring.” And Dustin Corns of Grapeland predicted, “Winter is just late this year. I don't think we've seen the coldest weather yet. I'm still optimistic we'll get a deep East Texas snow!” ... (Palestine Herald Press)
