Jun 10, 2016High school softball: Kingsmen present flowers after win over Memorial
That might be what sets Penn apart.
The Kingsmen (24-3) were dominant on the field against Elkhart Memorial (12-16) in Tuesday night’s Class 4-A regional. The 10-0 victory earned Penn a ticket to the Lafayette Harrison Semistate Saturday at 11 a.m. against Zionsville.
After the game, Penn players took a close look at the human side of the game.
Recently, Memorial senior left fielder Desiree Uribe lost her father in a motorcycle accident. She has played through the grief during the Crimson Chargers’ tournament run.
The Kingsmen saluted that courage.

May 3, 2016Ted Cruz presses the flesh at Bravo Cafe in Osceola in day before Indiana presidential primary
Cruz appeared more hungry to make last-minute connections that could translate into votes.
Monday’s stop was Cruz’s second in the Elkhart area. Last week, he greeted hundreds of fans at Lucchese’s Italian Restaurant in Elkhart.
As he made his way past a table at Bravo Cafe, he was asked by The Truth about his chances on Election Day.
“I am hopeful. I’ve got enormous faith and confidence in the people of the Hoosier state,” Cruz said.
The tour through the café exemplified Cruz’s grass-roots approach, contrasting greatly with rival Trump, whose campaign has relied heavily on huge rallies and plenty of media coverage.
Cruz gets much less media attention, but makes up for it by pressing the flesh. Surrounded by media and onlookers, he slowly paced himself until he had reached every table and shook every extended hand. He talked with little children, older adults and several families, repeatedly telling people that he appreciated their support and punctuated the need for a big turnout.
One woman told Cruz she was praying for him, and he shook her hand graciously. Another talked about his story of immigrating to the United States.
Cruz might have recognized Scotty Robertson, who has seen Cruz four times in the past week. He was at Lucchese’s and the rally in South Bend Thursday followed by another Cruz rally in La Porte Sunday night. This time, he brought his wife, Jami and their 1- year-old daughter, Karlee.
Patterson considers himself a constitutional conservative and is strongly anti-abortion.
He said he feels as if he’s watching history unfold. But why make the effort to see him four times?
“Senator Cruz needs to know that he has the support of Hoosiers,” Patterson replied.
Is he worried about Trump winning the nomination?
“I’m worried about Trump because if he’s the Republican nominee, I won’t have anyone I can vote for,” he said
John Beck, a truck driver from South Bend, brought along a book by talk show Mark Levin for Cruz to sign and ended up talking with Cruz for several minutes and posed for a photo with him. He said he’s more of a Cruz supporter than just anti-Trump. (The Elkhart Truth)

SCHRC releasing book
The Sheboygan County Historical Research Center, 518 Water St., Sheboygan Falls, has announced the release of its new book “Rebuilding a Railroad in the 21st Century” by John Winter.
The new volume documents the rebuilding of the 11-mile rail line from Plymouth to Sheboygan after lying dormant for nearly 30 years. More than just a fix-it-up job, the project was the replacement of the entire line from the ground up with new track built to modern standards to handle heavy loads. It also required one trestle to be completely replaced and others reinforced.
The book includes dozens of color images documenting construction with before and after photos taken at dozens of locations. Also included is the history of this line from the pre-Civil War era to current times.
The book is available at the SCHRC, at schrc.org or at 920-467-4667.

Saturday ‘opening day’ for Pumpkinvine Trail
Hikes, bike checks and a bike/poker game will mark Saturday’s “opening day” for the trail that links Shipshewana and Goshen. The Pumpkinvine (pumpkinvine.org) is open year-round, but the event is a way for the national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy to show off its trails.
Several events start at Goshen’s Abshire Park: a bird and tree identification walk from 8 to 9 a.m., bike checks from 9 a.m. to noon and a 3½-mile group fitness walk at 1 p.m. There will be a wildflower hike from 3 to 4:30 p.m., and you can bike five miles to the starting point at 2:15 p.m. from Abshire Park or carpool there at 2:45 p.m. from the trail parking lot at County Road 35.
Or join the “Pokervine” Chase from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., where you’ll bike along the Pumpkinvine Trail and pick up five playing cards, choosing from among nine stops along the trail’s entire length. When it’s done, the top three poker hands will win prizes worth $100, $50 and $25. Register for $8 by noon Friday at Eventbrite.com or sign up for $10 Saturday at Pumpkinvine Cyclery, 413 N. Main St. (new location) in Middlebury; Lincoln Avenue Fitness, 430 W. Lincoln Ave. in Goshen; Abshire Park Cabin in Goshen; or JoJo’s Pretzels, 205 N. Harrison St. in Shipshewana, Ind.
Fish for free Saturday— and let kids compete
Indiana residents won’t need a license to fish in the state Saturday. And kids ages 6 to 13 can compete for prizes — for longest and most fish caught — in a derby Saturday at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend. Kids need to check in at 8 a.m. and fish from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the ponds. Bait and a limited amount of fishing gear will be available, though kids can bring their own. Walk-ins accepted. Call 574-654-3155 to reserve a spot.
Shop at Audubon sale
Shop for used household stuff from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the red barn at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend. The annual sale benefits both the local Audubon Society and the county parks. If you want to donate goods for the sale, drop them off at the red barn from 2 to 6 p.m. today or from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Free park admission from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.
