May 25, 2017OBITUARY: David M. Paparella
Michael Paparella, III of Great Falls, MT and Paul Paparella of Paradise Valley, AZ and by his sister Roseanne Simanavage of Crown Point, NY as well as his nieces and nephews Suzanne, Steve, Katie, Matthew, Wendy, John, Josh and Joe. He is also survived by his beloved Aunt Gigi (Virginia) Smith of Schenectady, NY, and cousins Mandy, H.J., Gemma, Amanda, Robert, Michael, Mark and Joseph. David was a member of Huntington Fire Company #3. Through high school he worked as a volunteer at Griffin Hospital in Derby. David became a truck driver soon after graduating Shelton High School in 1976 which led to him buying his own rig and traveling over the road. In 1980, he got off the road and drove a school bus in Shelton. David was also a videographer for Shelton High football during his time as a bus driver. Later that school year he joined the band Thunderidge and became their sound engineer. Following his love for music he moved to California in 1983 where he met his new best friend Claudia and worked at her company, ProAudio, in Burbank, CA as an equipment technician. He had the good fortune to work with dozens of celebrity musicians. In 1985 while still at ProAudio he had the opportunity to become a partner in the startup company RBJ Computer Systems, also in Burbank CA where he remained for more than 28 years. David spent most of those years as a hardware technician and software programmer. After selling his ownership in RBJ and retiring from the escrow automation industry they moved to Apple Valley along with his parents and son. For many years, ... (Shelton Herald)
Jul 27, 2016Tour features yards that are back in bloom
Darla and James Gallagher of Crown Point just purchased a new home and have been facing landscaping issues for the past three months.
"The foliage around the house is overgrown and the garden looks like a forest," Darla said, with a laugh, as the couple arrived at this year's, 16th Annual Secret Gardens Tour, sponsored by the Miller Garden Club. "We need help and we thought coming here would give us some ideas."
Hundreds of other visitors to the event that featured six landscaping projects in homes situation in the Miller section of Gary had the same mission.
"I'm just getting into gardening and I don't have a clue about the different varieties of flowers or how to grow then," said Nz Moore of Gary. "My friend John Purnell invited me to come along with him today. He has a beautiful garden and has been doing this for more than 40 years, so he's a mentor to me."
This year's agenda included six beautifully landscaped homes. Tour buses shuttled guests to and from the newly-remodeled Aquatorium in Marquette Park.

Feb 3, 2016Bagger Dave's closes in Schererville, Crown Point
Crown Point and Schererville.
The Schererville location, at 1200 U.S. 41, had been open just over a year. The Crown Point restaurant, at 10755 Broadway Drive, opened in March.
In all, the metro Detroit-based Bagger Dave's chain is closing eight underperforming restaurants, including seven in Indiana.
The Bagger Dave's in Crown Point and Schererville were eventually supposed to employ more than 150 people. Bagger Dave's also had aspired to open a Valparaiso location, but is pulling out of the market altogether, Field Marketing Manager Eddie Bard said.
"The decision was strictly financial-based as the Schererville and Crown Point locations were underperforming," he said. "We don't have plans to expand in that market at this time."
Bagger Dave's specialized in local craft beer, house-made sodas, specialty cocktails served in mason jars and burgers that could be loaded with "meaningless free toppings." Model trains roll around overhead in the restaurants.
Owner Diversified Restaurant Holdings Inc. will have a single remaining Indiana location in Fort Wayne. The company, which also owns 40 Buffalo Wild Wings, had been trying to grow its Bagge... (nwitimes.com)
