Elginite celebrates 100th birthday with car parade - Elgin Courier

Department, paraded down MLK Boulevard and Church Street from Booker T. Washington Elementary School to a spot in front of Greater Mount Vernon Zion AME Church, where Flowers sat and waved to the passing vehicles. Many of the vehicles were decorated with pink balloons and other decorations, such as signs wishing Flowers a happy birthday. “Everything was lovely,” Flowers said. “I enjoyed the whole day.” After the parade, Elgin Mayor Chris Cannon read a proclamation to Flowers, declaring that day as Ivory Flowers Day in Elgin. Lots has changed over the years, Flowers said. When she was younger, she recalls riding in a wagon to McDade and Elgin, walking to school, picking up pecans and walnuts, raising hogs, chickens and turkeys, and hunting r abbits and deer. She loved going to school and playing basketball, as well as going to church every Sunday. “I’ve lived a good life,” Flowers said. “God has blessed me and brought me a mighty, mighty long way.” Her advice to others is “serving the Lord.” “God is first, and self is next,” she said. “I’m still walking and going (to church), I give God the credit for it.” ...

Where to see bluebonnets and wildflowers in Dallas-Fort Worth while social distancing - culturemap.com

Drive. Another is along the Bluebonnet Trail Greenbelt, just east of where the trail crosses Custer Road. Frisco's got some pretty ones just outside Zion Cemetery. For those making it a day-long adventure, farther out of the Metroplex, there are patches at the entrance to Mallard Park in Lavon (about 30 miles north of McKinney) and fields of wildflowers off Highway 75 in Denison and Sherman, spotters say. Practical considerationsBefore you head out on a country drive, remember we are living in a world without pit stops at roadside Whataburgers. Plan snacks, drinks, and potential restroom situations accordingly. Also, remember the "groups" rule. If you approach a pretty patch and another family is taking photos, ride on by. Some regular guidelines to keep in mind, too: Don't trespass on private property. Don't pick the flowers. Step gently so you don't squish them, and don't leave anything behind. Also, beware of snakes, fire ants, and other critters that might be hiding among the flowers. Wildflowers from the comfort of your couchCan’t get outside? Enjoy a virtual tour of what’s blooming around the state on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Flickr page, populated with wildflower sightings from state parks and wildlife management areas, or its Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, where anyone can share photos of the great outdoors. Proska says the INaturalist app will allow you to see what’s in bloom in different regions around the Metroplex. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin also posts sightings on a curated Instagram account, @texaswildflowerwatch (#txwildflowers2020) and has a narrated virtual tour of the Center. --- Melissa Gaskill contributed to this report.

Live a little, eat a flower | Sweet Basil and the Bee - Chico Enterprise-Record

A newly-formed squash the size of your pinky in the early morning will be the size of Zion’s blown-out basketball shoe by nightfall if you leave it behind. As much as I love zucchini and appreciate the generosity of these two, I am weary of its dominance in my refrigerator. I decided one way to stem the flow of squash was to nip it in the bud — literally. Squash blossoms are lovely and its long been on my bucket list to try cooking with them.Known in Italy as fiori di zucca, squash blossoms are available at farmers markets, and at some grocery stores when they’re in season. Look for blooms that are bright and not shriveled and use them as quickly as possible after buying. What to do with them? Melissa Rodriguez, executive chef at New York City’s Del Posto: “While they are delicate, they aren’t precious,” says Rodriguez, who loves the blossoms’ mild summer squash flavor. She tears the flowers to toss with cooked pasta, shreds them into frittatas, and stuffs the whole blooms with lobster meat, fresh mint, and mascarpone. “They’re only at the Greenmarket for a few weeks at the beginning of summer,” she says, “and as a chef, I get so excited.” You can also sauté them in butter with scallions and then add beaten eggs to the pan and bake for a simple frittata. Or, toss them wi...
