December 16, 2019 in Normal. She is also preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Helm. Dawn is survived by two daughters, Debra Sasveld of Naperville, Dauna (Mark) Delashmit of Bloomington, six grandchildren, Jessica (Tom) Carpy, Kelsey Sasveld, Zack Delashmit, Hallie (Robert) Bartlett, Lucas Sasveld, Sadie Delashmit, two great-grandchildren Raegan Bartlett and Abigail Carpy, and one sister LaVerne Wolgast of North Tonawanda, NY. Dawn was an Elementary Teacher for thirty-five years mostly in Southern Illinois, including the towns of Bunker Hill, Gillespie, Vandalia, Mount Vernon, Harrisburg, and last teaching in Collinsville Unit District 10, retiring in 1986. After retirement she substitute taught at Christ the King School in Springfield. When she wasn't teaching, she and her husband partnered well for many years in the churches he pastored, with Dawn working in Christian Education and Children's ministry. They were very proud of the years they spent at Sugar Creek Methodist Church in Springfield where they were part of an outreach team whose motto was "Place for Beginning, Becoming, and Belonging." Dawn loved playing the piano, listening to musicals, walking for exercise, shopping, and traveling the world. She was known for her coordinated outfits, including jewelry, that she wore throughout her life. She possessed a welcoming nature and was always desiring to help others. Dawn found humor in many situations; she rarely missed an episode of "The Tonight Show," starring Johnny Carson, her favorite comedian. She was fiercely devoted to her husband and children and always their biggest fan. In addition to farm-fresh flowers, Palmer Florist also sells hand-dipped chocolates, fresh fruit arrangements, plush toys and other gifts.The Naperville resident had never worked with flowers prior to purchasing the shop, but his friend convinced him to get into the business, which Kowalczyk says has changed tremendously over the years.“When I bought the shop, everything was done by hand, and the internet has changed the whole business,” he said. “We get a lot of online orders, and people can see photos of the arrangements so they know exactly what they want.”Despite the explosion of online shopping, it’s the personal connection with the customers that keeps places like Palmer Florist in business. Braswell said the shop has been a part of the community for so long that the customers are more like friends.“We hear their stories, and they’re heartfelt. We’re here for our community,” she said. “There’s a legacy here. We’re part of the fabric of the community, and we care about each other. Simbang Gabi heralds Christmas in Philippine tradition

Lourdes Chew is on the Simbang Gabi committee at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Naperville. St. Thomas is hosting Simbang Gabi Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. "Most Filipinos who have moved here and are Americans now have experienced this as a child. For most of us, we grew up with this tradition," she said. "We're very excited the diocese supports us." Chew said the tradition is a long held one. "It started way back in the 1500s," she said. "Back home, it's actually held outdoors. The whole town usually participates in it." Chew said beautiful rituals are part of the evening services. Star-shaped lanterns, symbolizing the star of Bethlehem, are placed in front of the altar, and the priest wears white vestments. Some parishioners wear traditional dress, such as the barong, a dressy gown, Alzona said. "We have some readings that are going to be done in Tagalog," Chew said. "Also, some of the songs are going to be styled in Tagalog. Then also we have a procession with the children participating. We bring an empty manger and a mantle of some candles and flowers. It symbolizes some waiting." Readings and songs also are delivered in English, said Lori Culberson, liturgy coordinator at St. Thomas. "They really are trying to mix the two, as far as the languages," she said. Culberson said St. Thomas has been hosting Simbang Gabi services for 20 years. "Being Catholic isn't just here in Naperville. Being Catholic isn't just here in the United States. It reminds us how big we are," she said, "and how small we are." A second collection taken at each Mass will benefit Philippine charities. Chew said collections taken in churches in the western cluster will benefit the Mountaintop Tribal School Outreach in the Philippines. Eastern cluster churches will donate their second collection to the Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, which runs an orphanage and cares for the poor and homeless in Naga City, Philippines, Alzona said. "After the services, they serve traditional food and everyone's invited. Filipino families are really close, so they're welcoming to everyone," Culberson said. Alzona said Christ the King will serve noodles and chicken, while Chew said St. Thomas will serve pancit noodles and egg rolls. All are welcome to attend the Simbang Gabi Masses and the celebrations that follow, both Chew and Alzona said. "We want to encourage people to bring their friends," Chew said. Funeral set for Naperville activist shot in Chicago

Family and friends are preparing to lay to rest Naperville activist Ronald Allen after the 73-year-old was shot to death last week in Chicago. Services will begin with visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 16 at DuPage African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lisle, where Allen had been a member since the late 1970s. Family members and the church then will host a wake for Allen from 1 to 2 p.m. Dec. 17 with a funeral service to follow. Allen was shot to death at about 2:20 a.m. Friday while driving on the 1300 block of North Laramie Avenue in Chicago, where he had been visiting friends and playing cards. Chicago police say the investigation into the shooting continues, but they do not have any suspects or information about a possible motive. Relatives say they have spent the days since Allen's death going through family photos and reminiscing about his life.
