Voice of The Southern: Choices with cost

About the American Red Cross shelter that has been operating in Murphysboro and providing shelter; about the United Way agencies that have been providing food and clothing; about the Southern Illinois Community Foundation, which is providing the first few dollars to those who are feeling helpless and hopeless. These local agencies are providing us with an opportunity to contribute; a choice to those of us who are dry to help those who are inundated by not only water but the muck and mud that remain when the rivers recede. But this time, that choice comes to each of us with a cost — and we encourage you to count that cost and then to generously give to those whose pretty little house on a hill was never a reality. PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Jersey's Flowers runs to first at sectional meet

Freeburg, Nashville, Steeleville, Benton, Mater Dei, Herrin, Sparta, Red Bud, McLeansboro, Columbia and Murphysboro. Harrison Thomas of Carterville was the individual champion. CLASS 3A The Edwardsville girls team grabbed their final spot in the team race as well. The Tigers outdistanced Lincoln-Way North 125-167 at the Normal Sectional Meet. Minooka was the team champ with 20 points, followed by Lincoln-Way Central 113, O’Falon 116, Lincoln-Way East 116 and Edwardsville. Following Lincoln-Way North were Normal, Rock Island, Joliet West, Moline, Joliet Central and Belleville East. Edwardsville runners included Maddie Miller, who was 11th overall in a time of 18:45, Rachel Schoenecker 18:55, Colleen Corkery 19:22, Kirara Delgado 19:28, Julianna Determan 19:36, Melissa Spencer 19:37 and Victoria Vegher 19:45.
