After century in Mount Prospect, Busse flower shop bolts for Rolling Meadows - Chicago Daily Herald

Busse's Flowers & Gifts has been around as long as Mount Prospect itself. Even longer, since Louis Busse and his son, Fred, opened the business at 303 E. Evergreen in 1916, a year before the village's incorporation. That association soon will come to an end. Linda Seils, a Busse family member and fourth-generation owner, said Monday the business is moving from its current location at 100 E. Northwest Hwy. to a new home at 3445 Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows. Seils, who runs the business with her husband, Paul Seils, said they hoped for a Dec. 1 opening in Rolling Meadows, but difficulty in getting the flo...

Busse Flowers Plans To Leave; Three Potential Developers For Block 56 - Journal & Topics Newspapers Online

The Chase Bank office building in downtown Mount Prospect. Mount Prospect business Busse Flowers announced on its shop door that operations are moving to Rolling Meadows by the end of the year. But when Busse Flowers moves by December and the village’s nearby Police/Fire Headquarters move by April 2020, what will happen to Block 56? Block 56, sometimes referred to the Chase Bank and Public Safety block, is landlocked by Northwest Highway, Maple Street, Busse Avenue and Emerson Street. Currently, the Chase building (111 E. Busse Ave.), Emerson’s Ale House (113 S. Emerson St.), the Police/Fire Headquarters (112 E. Northwest Hwy.), Mount Prospect Eye Care (104 E. Northwest Hwy.) and Busse Flowers (100 E. Northwest Hwy.), along with a few other businesses make up Block 56. In September, village officials sent out a request for proposals (RFP), attempting to interest developers seeking to develop where the current police and fire department headquarters are. Village Manager Michael Cassady told the Journal that the village received...

Plum Grove Garden Club plants flowers, vegetables at Clearbrook group homes

While a pair of landscaping companies -- Bolder Landscaping in Mount Prospect and Acres Group in Plainfield -- donated the mulch and helped to trim and reshape the beds, the gardeners got down on their hands and knees to plant the flowers. They ranged from perennials, such as purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans and day lilies; to annuals that included begonias, marigolds and petunias, as well as rose bushes, ground cover and native grasses. "This is fun -- and rewarding," said Kay Marguerite of Palatine, a near 40-year member of the garden club. "And it's nice to see all the residents working hard and so excited about this." Mostly, the clients were interested in the vegetable garden, planted in a raised bed in the backyard. The chance to cultivate their own garden sparked memories -- and conversation -- about how they grew vegetables at their homes, back when they lived with their parents. "Back home, we had a garden," said Scott Bennett. "My parents always grew tomatoes and cucumbers." William Good now takes a horticulture class twice a week at Little City in Palatine, consequently his housemates looked to him when deciding what vegetables to plant. In the end, they settled on tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and rosemary. "I like working with my hands," Good said, "and returning to the earth." The project came about through a grant from the Palatine Jaycees, whose members saw the benefits of Clearbrook clients learning to garden, as well as the outreach possibilities of the garden club members extending their expertise. Tim Jones, the activity director for Clearbrook's 50 group homes, says the project is unique in that the Plum Grove gardeners will return every week during the summer, to maintain the new flowers and vegetables, and their new relationships. "This is the first of its kind, that I know of," Jones said. "It's not just a one-day spruce up. This kind of partnership sets the foundation for the clients to continue, ...

Funeral services Tuesday for Arlington Heights family killed in crash

Friedrichs Funeral Home, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church. Both places are located in Mount Prospect.Rev. Jeff Gavin, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, said he married Kevin and Anita Crawford, and he also baptized their three children in the historic church on Linneman Road. Now, Gavin faces the task of presiding over the funeral service for Kevin, Anita and Kirsten Crawford."Your emotions are still there, but you have to remember that in your position, you are looked at as the rock," Gavin said. "You represent the Lord, and you have to be strong."A GoFundMe campaign also was established following Thursday's fatal crash to provide financial support for the Crawford family's two surviving children, Hailee, 15, a sophomore at Prospect High School, and Christian, 9, a fourth grader at Windsor Elementary School in Arlington Heights.Neither Hailee nor Christian were involved in the crash. They now are under the care of their grandparents and aunt."This horrific (and) unthinkable tragedy happened while they were doing what most of us do – attending activities or sporting events," supporters of the Crawford family said in a statement on the GoFundMe website. "They leave behind two young children, Hailee, 15, (and) Christian, 9. It breaks my heart to think about what these kids are going through. Not only did these children lose both parents, but they also lost their big sister."The Des Plaines Police Department also continued its investigation into the deadly crash on Monday.Rog, who, court records show, had a history of traffic violations and had his driver's license suspended three times in recent years, appeared to have been driving more than 100 mph around 8:55 p.m. Thursday when his car slammed into a Chevrolet Impala driven by Kevin Crawford, who was turning into the Lattof YMCA parking lot from the eastbound lanes of Northwest Highway. The Impala was pushed into another vehicle traveling east, police said and, after the crash, was said to resemble "a ...
