These trees offer the most colorful leaves in the fall for Southern California gardeners - OCRegister

Ginkgo biloba, Modesto ash (Fraxinus velutina cv. Modesto), and Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra cv. italica) are three trees whose foliage turns brilliant gold this time of year. Ginkgo has a vertical growth habit and charming fan-shaped leaves. Unfortunately, its reputation in some quarters for inhibiting the aging process is a myth. While early studies showed that ginkgo leaf extract did slightly improve cognitive function, subsequent studies have disproven this claim. Ginkgo seeds are edible when roasted – and are considered a delicacy in the Far East — but they can also have toxic side effects. An indisputable drawback to the seeds is the malodorous pulp that surrounds them. However, ginkgos are dioecious, meaning trees are either male or female, with females being the foul-smelling seed bearers so that ginkgo trees purchased in nurseries nowadays are invariably males. Modesto ash, famous for its glittery foliage at this time of year, is susceptible to a variety of insect pests and diseases and, although established specimens are seen quite frequently throughout the Valley, it is not planted much these days. Lombardy poplar is a columnar specimen found locally at Warner Center. It is a perfect candidate for creating a stately entrance planted on either side of a long driveway although its surface roots can eventually be a problem. There are three local trees whose foliage changes to the classic fiery colors associated with the maples of northern climes: crepe myrtle, liquidambar, and Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum), whose luminescent foliage makes it the most memorable of local trees that turn color during this season. Take care, however, not to plant tallow tree adjacent to a sidewalk since its wax-coated seeds are a slip hazard for those who tread upon them. Liquidambar has l...

Monday's Sports in Brief

Flowers said. "There was a lot of work to get this hat."The Patriots returned to New England, bringing their fifth Vince Lombardi Trophy home to show off for fans who filled the parking lots outside the team's stadium and lined up for hours outside the souvenir shop hoping to buy championship gear.Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia carried the silver trophy off the bus at Gillette Stadium, where fans were dozens deep along the route in near-freezing temperatures. The parade is planned for Tuesday in Boston, with the now traditional "duck boat" rally through the city. It will be the fifth championship parade for the football team since 2002; the Red Sox have had three and the Bruins and Celtics one apiece since then.SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers officially hired Atlanta offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach more than a month after firing Chip Kelly after just one season. The 49ers settled on Shanahan a couple weeks ago but had to wait until after the Falcons played in the Super Bowl to sign him to a contract. Shanahan will be formally introduced at a news conference later this week.Shanahan is the son of two-time Super Bowl winning head coach Mike Shanahan, who also won a title as offensive coordinator in San Francisco in 1994. Simbang Gabi heralds Christmas in Philippine tradition

Tagalog. "It means 'Night Mass,'" said Ditas Alzona, organizer of the special service at Christ the King Catholic Church in Lombard, which will host Simbang Gabi for the eastern cluster on Thursday, Dec. 15. Many people go to Mass on each of the nine nights to complete the novena, she said. "It's in preparation for Christmas Day, in preparation for the coming of the Lord," she said. Alzona said the Mass, which includes a children's procession, music and special readings, is similar to those observed in the islands. "The only difference is the time. Normally, in the Philippines, Simbang Gabi is celebrated at 4 o'clock in the morning because the people are fishermen or farmers," she said. "We have to adjust to the time." Masses in the diocese are scheduled for as early as 4:30 p.m. and as late as 7:30 p.m. Lourdes Chew is on the Simbang Gabi committee at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Naperville. St. Thomas is hosting Simbang Gabi Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. "Most Filipinos who have moved here and are Americans now have experienced this as a child. For most of us, we grew up with this tradition," she said. "We're very excited the diocese supports us." Chew said the tradition is a long held one. "It started way back in the 1500s," she said. "Back home, it's actually held outdoors. The whole town usually participates in it." Chew said beautiful rituals are part of the evening services. Star-shaped lanterns, symbolizing the star of Bethlehem, are placed in front of the altar, and the priest wears white vestments. Some parishioners wear traditional dress, such as the barong, a dressy gown, Alzona said. "We have some readings that are going to be done in Tagalog," Chew said. "Also, some of the songs are going to be styled in Tagalog. Then also we have a procession with the children participating. We bring an empty manger and a mantle of some candles and flowers. It symbolizes some waiting." Readings and songs also are delivered in English, said Lori Culberson, ... (Chicago Daily Herald)

Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom

I run a small carpet cleaning business that cleans restaurants. My mom was an activist in the atheist movement and my grandfather was the mayor of Lombard, Illinois. Both of them installed in me a deep sense of humanitarian responsibility. But it wasn’t until Bernie Sanders’ run for president that I took a leadership role in my community. DuPage County for Bernie Sanders began organizing in August 2015. At first it was a handful of us putting flyers on people’s doors about Bernie. DuPage County encompasses the northwest suburbs of Chicago and has more than 900,000 residents. We have grown to become a regional network with 10-15 core organizers and hundreds of active volunteers down to the precinct level that has basically gained leverage over the local Democratic Party. We have barely spent a dime. We are a word-of-mouth group. We go door to door. W...
