Kudzu is flowering now

I’m working around my roses. Can I possibly be transmitting the disease via the gloves?Buddy Snipes, DeKalb CountyA: Rose rosette virus is spread by tiny mites that feed on infected plants and are then transferred, usually by wind, to a healthy bush. In theory I suppose your gloves could carry mites from one bush to another but I don’t know that it has ever been observed. Just to be safe, wipe the gloves with a rag dampened with soapy water before you work with your “clean ” roses.Q: We have rabbits who like my yard and flowers. What do you recommend to make them move away? J. Kalahar, emailA: Rabbits are tough to control. A low fence will keep them out of individual flower beds but that’s hard to accomplish when you have a big landscape or lots of spots underneath shrubbery where they like to hide. I don’t know of a repellent that works consistently but you could try Milorganite fertilizer, which is reputed to repel animals.Q: I have no choice but to transplant some mature azaleas this month. I would really like to cut them back. Can you advise?Celine Thomas, AcworthA: I remember moving six hydrangeas and ten azaleas on July 4 many years ago. It was hotter than blue blazes that day but they all survived! I think the key for you is to have soft organic soil ready to accept them in the new garden. After planting, really soak the soil around them and then put mulch around each plant. Don’t fertilize them until next spring but you can prune them back by a foot or so if that seems necessary. A more severe pruning will increase their need for water and will stress them unnecessarily.Q: The last storm knocked over some of my corn. Should I stand them back up and hill some dirt around each one?Mike Childers, e... (MyAJC)

Rain art blooms on downtown Rockford sidewalks

Bureau to dress up the center city and crank up our cultural volume. This isn't your child's sidewalk chalk art. The tourism bureau partnered with a DeKalb creative agency and spent $1,800 to install four different images on sidewalks at 12 locations downtown and in the city's Midtown District on Tuesday. They used a hydrophobic chemical that works like invisible ink. The images become visible when they come into contact with water and disappear when the sidewalk is completely dry. The chemical is biodegradable, won't harm pets and remains affixed to the sidewalk for two or three months, depending on how much foot traffic and water the image encounters. "Our plan is to see how well this goes and then expand this to a lot more locations throughout the city in the late spring so the images last through next summer," said Josh Albrecht. Stencil designs used downtown and in the Midtown District were created by RACVB Creative Services Manager Liz Wood. An image of Rockford IceHogs mascot Hammy the Hog greets pedestrians outside BMO Harris Bank Center on Elm Street. Images at other locales include the words "Rockford rising" set against a morning sun; a pastiche of gears pay homage to the city's manufacturing heritage; and hearts replace the O's in the word "Rockford," set in a big, blocky font. OC Creative, the DeKalb company that installed the designs, has done similar work for St. Charles Park District and the city of DeKalb. OC Creative has eight employees and two offices — one in DeKalb and another that opened in March at Stewart Square, 308 W. State St., in Rockford. President and Creative Director Brian Oster said he's already rece... (Rockford Register Star)

Flowers shines, South Florida routs Northern Illinois

Illinois: Huskies get a break from the road, where they played consecutive games to begin a season for the first time since 2013, and return to DeKalb, Illinois for their home opener against San Diego State. "It'll be good to be home," Carey said. "We've got to a bunch of things to correct and move forward." South Florida: Begins the tougher portion of its non-conference schedule, traveling to Syracuse next Saturday before returning home to face No. 3 Florida State in two weeks. "Now we get to see if we can take this show on the road and do what we do at home," Taggart said. © 2016 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Alumnae Reunion Weekend & May Day, 2016

Reunion Weekend is something Ambah Frederick Kioko, WC ’01, looks forward to every year. The biology major, who has been a school psychologist for DeKalb County Schools for the last 10 years, has attended every May Day celebration since 1997. “I get kind of teary-eyed when I see everybody here,” she said. “It makes me feel the same way I felt when I was back here in ’97. Everybody’s like a family.” Fourteen notable Brenau graduates were recognized at the annual Outstanding Alumni Awards. Former Brenau Board of Trustee member Evanda Gravitte Moore – the daughter in-law of the late Grace Hooten Moore, the first female chair of the university’s board of trustees – was inducted as one of the newest members of the Brenau University Alumni Hall of Fame. “It’s quite an honor to be among so many other women who have been inducted in previous years, who have been role models for me, this community and Brenau,” Moore said. Brenau Board of Trustee member Robin Smith Dudley, WC ’78, received the university’s Alumni Service Award for her 30-plus years teaching secondary and postsecondary health care science. “It’s always a pleasure to come back,” Dudley said, “and have all those nostalgic feelings resurface, all those great memories and experiences on campus while I was attending Brenau.” Several alumnae gathered for ceremonies paying respects to deceased classmates. Alpha Gamma Delta members met outside Geiger Hall to dedicate a maple tree to Jessica Walker, WC ’03, who died Nov. 5, 2015, and Samantha Carson, WC ’11, who died Aug. 20, 2015, while Phi Mu sorority sisters dedicated a picnic table outside the Tea Room to the memory of Rae Brewer, WC ’94, who died Dec. 12., 2015. Perhaps no one summed up the emotions of Alumnae Reunion Weekend better than Women’s College Dean Debra Dobkins, who described Brenau’s place as a “forever home” for its graduates. “You have left your heart here,” she told alumnae during the yearly champagne brunch, “and it thrills us to see you come back and stay connected with us.” ...
