Main Street Florist provides flowers for Illinois Senate By Misty Fritz A Carlinville business had a chance last week to show off its best work for state officials: Main Street Florist, owned by Sarah LoBue, was chosen as the official florist of the 2019 Illinois State Senate Inauguration of the 101st General Assembly, held at the Capitol Building in Springfield on Wednesday, Jan. 9. LoBue said Main Street Florist got the job through "pure luck," as someone in Springfield had seen the company's work and brought it up when florists were being considered. "They reached out to us, and we did a proposal for them, went up and met them in person, did measurements, saw what all the job would take," said LoBue. "It was just word of mouth, really. Somebody was familiar with us and mentioned us." Main Street Florist provided about 90 feet of linear garland, two large pieces on the main podium area, large arrangements in openings on the sides of the chamber, and two large pieces near the chamber doors. PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Flowers finishes eight at state meet

Decatur MacArthur Sectional Meet in 15:13. Class 1A In the Class 1A boys state meet, also at Detweiller, Carlinville finished 18th in the team race, while Roxana placed 25th. Carlinville finishers included Jason Landon, Samuel Mock, Charles Helton IV, Bailey Lippold, Briley Roper, Cale Williams and Grayson Armour. Roxana finishers were James Henseler, Cree Stumpf, Brandon Isom, Dakota Stumpf, Will Cotter, Devin Thomeczek and Jazz Richardson. Individually, Metro East Lutheran’s Javon Watkins finished 83rd in a time of 16:16 and East Alton-Wood River’s Brenden Springman was 143rd in 17:05. Class 3A In the boys 3A meet, xxxx GIRLS Class 3A Edwardsville placed 26th in the team race. Tigers runners included Abby Schrobilgen, Melissa Spencer, Jaycie Hudson, Abby Korak, Julianna Dterman, Maddie Miller and Victoria Vegher. Class 1A Marquette Catholic High’s Riley McVckery, a freshman ran to an 89th-place finish with a time of 19:37. She had advanced to the state meet as an indivdual out of the Metro East Lutheran Sectional Meet. Jersey’s Ben Flowers finished eighth in Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A Boys State Cross Country at Detweiller Park in Peoria. PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Jersey's Flowers repeats as sectional champ

East Alton-Wood River senior Brenden Springman (16th in 17:49) qualified for state as individuals. Effingham St. Anthony Class 1A Sectional – The Carlinville Cavaliers are headed to state for the first time since 2010 after placing fourth in Effingham. Robinson won the sectional with 106 points, with St. Joseph-Ogden (113), Lawrenceville (139), Carlinville (158) and Champaign St. Thomas More (161) claiming the sectional’s five state berths. Junior Samuel Mock (26th in 17:11), sophomore Bailey Lippold (27th in 17:11), junior Jason Landon (28th in 17:15), junior Charles Helton IV (32nd in 17:23) and junior Grayson Armour (45th in 17:36) scored for Carlinville. GIRLS Edwardsville Class 3A Sectional – Edwardsville scored 100 points to place third in the team standings at SIUE and earned its fourth successive state appearance. Minooka swept the top four individual places and won the sectional with 24 points. Yorkville (36) was second, followed by Edwardsville, O’Fallon (124) and Lincoln-Way East (154) as state qualifiers. The Tigers scored sophomore Abby Schrobilgen (13th in 19:46), junior Melissa Spencer (15th in 19:56), freshman Abby Korak (20th in 20:06), senior Julianna Determan (24th in 20:25) and sophomore Jayce Hudson (32nd in 20:33). Metro East Lutheran Class 1A Sectional – Marquette Catholic freshman Riley Vickrey ran fourth in 20:09 to qualify as an individual next Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Doris Burns

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. today at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline. Prayer service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Heinz Funeral Home, Carlinville, Ill, with visitation 10 a.m. until service time.  Burial will be at New Calvary Cemetery, Carlinville. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Pilot Club in Moline, Alleman High School or Seton School. Doris was born March 31, 1930, in Springfield, the daughter of Virgil and Anna (Knetzer) Burns. She graduated from Burlington Catholic High School in 1947. Doris started working at Jacobsen Paint and Glass, Burlington. In 1951, she started at Iowa Ordnance Plant and retired in January 1994 from U.S. Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command on the Rock Island Arsenal. Doris was a member of Christ the King Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of Pilot Club, Moline, and Seton School, Moline, where she was a volunteer librarian. Survivors include her brothers, Robert Burns, Huntsville, Ala., and Richard (Jo) Burns, Rock Island; nieces, Cindy (Mike) Portwood, Norman, Okla., Margaret Ann (George) White, Huntsville; and nephew, Lynn Burns, Huntsville. CROSS COUNTRY: Jersey's Ben Flowers wins 2A regional title

Christian Cazier 43rd. CM sophomore Cohl Callies will advance as an individual with a 28th-place finish overall. CLASS 1A BOYS At Shelbyville, Carlinville finished second overall behind the home team in the team race. The Cavaliers’ finishers included Nolan Kreipe sixth, Cory Landon seventh, Jason Landon eighth, Charles Helton IV 10th, Grayson Armour 15th, Samuel Mock 19th and Bailey Lippold 35th. At New Athens, East Alton-Wood River finished third in the team standings and Metro East Lutheran was fourth. Roxana finished seventh and Southwestern was ninth. EA-WR finishers included Brendan Springman seventh, Matthew Shea 21st, Andrew Noack 28th, Chase Wallendorff 29th, Ryne White 32nd, Jacob Mustain 33rd and Liam Welch 36th. MEL finishers were Javon Watkins ninth, Darion Brooks 13th, Josh Jacobson 30th, Jonah Wilson 35th, Christian Engelbrecht 49th, Elijah Culbert 55th and Nathaniel Perry 66th. Southwestern’s Cadem Bohn advanced as an individual. CLASS 3A BOYS At Edwardsville, the host Tigers came away with the team title, rolling past O’Fallon 38-70. Belleville East was third, West fourth, Granite City fifth, Quincy sixth, Alton seventh and Collinsville eighth. Edwardsville finishers included Franky Romano second, Dan Powell fifth, Roland Prenzler sixth, Max Hartmann eighth, Sam McCormick 17th, Jacob Schoenthal 29th and Matt Swanson 32. Four Alton Redbirds runners will advance as individuals. Arie Macias was seventh, Jett Durr was 31st, Sam Gentelin 33rd and Kelvin Cummings was 34th. Granite City’s Will O’Keefe was the individual champion. CLASS 1A GIRLS The Carlinville girls rode the one-two finish of winner Colleen Madden and runner-up Jacey Roper to the team title at Shelbyville. Other Cavies finishers were Madelynn Williams 14th, Molley Lewis 20th, Stasia Nejmansowski 23rd, Mackenzie Harris 38th and Ryleigh Gibbel 39th. At New Athens, EA-WR’s Haley Kerpan was the individual champion in a time of 19:45 and she will advance as an individual, along with Marquette’s Natalie Halliday and Southwestern’s Ashley Moore.
