Dawn Lowe Obituary - Bloomington, IL | The Pantagraph - Legacy.com

Sasveld of Naperville, Dauna (Mark) Delashmit of Bloomington, six grandchildren, Jessica (Tom) Carpy, Kelsey Sasveld, Zack Delashmit, Hallie (Robert) Bartlett, Lucas Sasveld, Sadie Delashmit, two great-grandchildren Raegan Bartlett and Abigail Carpy, and one sister LaVerne Wolgast of North Tonawanda, NY. Dawn was an Elementary Teacher for thirty-five years mostly in Southern Illinois, including the towns of Bunker Hill, Gillespie, Vandalia, Mount Vernon, Harrisburg, and last teaching in Collinsville Unit District 10, retiring in 1986. After retirement she substitute taught at Christ the King School in Springfield. When she wasn't teaching, she and her husband partnered well for many years in the churches he pastored, with Dawn working in Christian Education and Children's ministry. They were very proud of the years they spent at Sugar Creek Methodist Church in Springfield where they were part of an outreach team whose motto was "Place for Beginning, Becoming, and Belonging." Dawn loved playing the piano, listening to musicals, walking for exercise, shopping, and traveling the world. She was known for her coordinated outfits, including jewelry, that she wore throughout her life. She possessed a welcoming nature and was always desiring to help others. Dawn found humor in many situations; she rarely missed an episode of "The Tonight Show," starring Johnny Carson, her favorite comedian. She was fiercely devoted to her husband and children and always their biggest fan. Dawn will be dearly missed by her family and friends, who take comfort in knowing that she will be reunited with her husband Don, who was the love of her life. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Illinois Education Association, and the National Education Association of Retired Teachers. Obituary: Peter Bartlett - Press Herald

Peter Bartlett YARMOUTH – Peter Bartlett passed away on Dec. 8, 2019, at age 59. Born Sept. 19, 1960, to Jim and Phyllis Bartlett, Pete grew up in Hampden, Maine, and graduated high school in 1979 from Hampden Academy. He was an outstanding athlete and captain of his football and basketball teams in high school. He went on to earn his B.S. in Marine Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy in 1983. Pete proceeded to start a career in the energy business, which included positions at Florida Power & Light, Central Maine Power, Constellation NewEnergy, and most recently, as Vice President at Competitive Energy Services in Portland. Pete lived life to the fullest and had a love for the outdoors. He ran, hiked, biked, and skied. His love of basketball never waned, and he regularly played with a close-knit group of friends in Yarmouth. Obituary: Arthur A. Black Jr. - Press Herald

Arthur is survived by his travelling companion and girlfriend of 30 years Gerry Frierson; son, Arthur III (Teresa) Black, daughter, Bonnie (Barry) Bartlett, daughter, Robyn (Steve Labrecque) Black; grandchildren, Aaron, Ryan, Jesse, Arthur IV, Alana, Cassie and Matti; six great-grandchildren; and many more nieces and nephews spread across the country. Arthur’s ashes will be interred next to his wife, Ruth, in August 2020 at a private family ceremony. There will also be a BBQ and celebration of Arthur’s life at Skip and Teresa’s camp on Little Sebago Lake in August 2020. Details to follow. Smelly 'Corpse Flower' Has Bloomed at UMass Amherst Natural History Collections - UMass News and Media Relations

Sumatran rainforest. Botanist and assistant biology professor Madelaine Bartlett, whose research interests include plant development and evolution, with greenhouse manager Chris Phillips, say the campus had its last blooming corpse flower about four years ago. Bartlett says, “These plants are sophisticated chemical factories; they have an amazing ability to produce chemicals to attract pollinators. It’s biological mimicry of a fascinating kind.” She adds that the corpse flower is just one of the many examples of biomimicry, unusual pollination methods and botanical oddities found in UMass Amherst’s “very special teaching and research collection” that is used regularly to teach students about some of the more unusual plants found around the world. Phillips notes that once a flower blooms, its “peak stinkiness” lasts about 24 to 48 hours depending on environmental conditions. Although the name ‘corpse flower’ is descriptive, it’s misleading. Instead of being a single flower, A. titanum actually bears hundreds of individual flowers; about 400 to 500 male and female on one structure, which grows about three inches per night. Phillips says the Morrill Greenhouse will extend its public open hours, normally 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., into the evening so that the public can come in and see it, along with other special botanicals in the collection.

'They did what they had to do': Relatives honor veterans at re-opened Galilee Memorial Gardens - The Commercial Appeal

Morris Jones was setting flowers on the gravesite of his uncle and brother on Memorial Day morning at the re-opened Galilee Memorial Gardens in Bartlett as he began to reflect on the dedication his relatives made. Jones, 54, of Cordova, said his brother Darryl Jones died at age 20 while serving in the Army. His uncle, Willie Jones, passed in 1990 after serving in World War II. Morris Jones said his uncle faced issues of segregation during the war but thinks his uncle was just glad it was over. "They had to go through things that I'm sure they were not proud of, but to serve their country, they did what they had to do. And that is what makes it so special," Jones said. Darryl Jones enlisted in the Army in 1979 and was killed 12 days before his 21st birthday during a fight. Morris Jones has younger relatives in the Navy, some of which have retired. For the Jones' family, the observance of Memorial Day is a priority for them. "It means a lot. They care enough for their country to serve their country. So we just want to honor them, not just this day, but all days because they gave so much," Jones said.

Annual Art in Bloom festival bursts with art, flowers and music

Saturday, May 12, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 13, in the heart of downtown, along Main and Bartlett streets and Central Avenue. Downtown streets will be closed to provide a safe, pedestrian-friendly event.“Everything is handmade,” says organizer Amy Rose. “The artisans submitted pictures of their booths with five of their products, jewelry, art or pottery, and our board juried the applications. The board looks for one-of-a-kind gifts from a diverse assortment of vendors.”Parking is free on weekends. Park anywhere you like outside the Art in Bloom parimeter. Stop by the information booth at Vogel Plaza, corner of East Main Street and Central, for a map of the festival and schedule of events.
