Opal L. (Gibson) Smith celebrates 90th birthday

Franklin Smith at a dance in Preston in October 1946. They were married April 1, 1947 in Preston, Idaho. Opal and Frank moved to Pocatello in 1951 and raised 3 children, Carolyn, Lorraine, and Kevin. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple on Aug. 10, 1961.Opal worked as a school lunch worker for 26 years at Franklin Junior High retiring in 1992. She especially enjoyed making cinnamon rolls and peanut butter candy.Opal and Frank love to travel and have visited places across the continental United States, Hawaii and Canada. Opal loves working in her garden with her flowers and other plants. Opal and Frank moved to Idaho Falls in 2014 and now reside at Morning Star Senior Living.Opal looks forward to celebrating her 90th birthday with her family including 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren later this year at Morning Star. Skip's Trailhead: Area trails offer all 'universal access'

Janet followed those tracks in 1964. That, my friends, is a combined 117 years skiing everywhere from Pocatello, Idaho’s Pebble Basin Ski Area to Heavenly Valley, in California. Between the two of us we have never had so much as a sprained ankle. And then four weeks ago Janet went downstairs to our kitchen to dish up a bowl full of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream and on her way back up broke 4 of the 5 metatarsal bones in her left foot. Ouch! It looks like we are going to miss the first 8 weeks of this year’s ski season. Lucky for us, we will still be in good physical shape to enjoy spring skiing in late March and April, because we live within 15 miles of four universal access hiking trails. These trails are all paved except Klickitat Rails to Trails, have grades easy enough for folks using crutches, walkers and even wheel chairs. We won’t miss out on our semi-weekly hikes or early season wildflowers. THE DALLES RIVER FRONT TRAIL You can access this trail at the new boat dock at the bottom of Union Street or the Kiwanis’s Klindt’s Cove Park at the Port of The Dalles Industrial Area. My favorite spot to begin a hike on this trail is at Klindt’s Cove. There is a handicap parking spot and a restroom complete with drinking fountain. Art Walk will feature ideas for that perfect, heart-felt gift for your loved ones. The First Friday Art Walk guide will be available at www.oldtownpocatello.com on Thursday. “A Night in Tuscany” will be sponsored by the Bannock Kiwanis at Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday from 5-8 p.m. The evening will include a variety of delicious and decadent food and beverage pairings, a silent auction, live music and caricatures by local artist Bob Beason. Wilma Rickert

Confirmation at Holy Childhood Catholic Church. Later, joining our father's faith, mom was confirmed Lutheran at Faith Lutheran Church in Pocatello, Idaho. Mom knew the Lord as her savior at a young age and carried His light through out her life showing her trust and faithfulness to Him, to us and all who knew her by her word and her deed. Mom met our dad while attending Notre Dame during nursing school, they married October 28, 1953 and enjoyed 56 years together before our dad passed in 2010. First & foremost she loved being a mom, being Grma Dit and then delighted in being G.G., time leftover was spent playing cards with her kids and her many friends at Meadowpoints. God, her family ­ and her friends, though scattered from Illinios to Alaska to Oklahoma, were her life. Her absence in our lives seems unbearable but we are comforted to know she is safe and happy with dad & all of her loved ones that have gone before her. Mom was a woman of incredible personal energy & strength well known for her personality and graciousness, she created a home that was always warm and welcoming, preferring to spend her time with her family & dear, dear friends. Professor Tom Lee died January 1, 2016. Born July 2, 1926 in Pocatello, ID to Wilford D. Lee and Lorine Elizabeth Stender Hutchinson. Reared in Provo. Graduated BY High. Continued studies at BYU and U of U in Physics and Astronomy. Taught at UVU for 28 years. Married Carolyn Thompson in Salt Lake Temple September 21, 1951. Served mission to Argentina. Served as bishop of the Groveton Ward in Alexandria, VA and the Provo 9th Ward. Children: Bob (Penny), Becky (deceased), Betsy (Ellis) Bailey, Ben (Becky), Barbara (David) Acheson, Bill (Elena), and Bonnie. 24 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by Carolyn and brothers John, David and Richard. Services on Friday, January 8, 2016 11:00 a.m. at Nelson Family Mortuary 4780 N. University Ave. Provo.
