Mar 9, 2017#IWD2017: Global marches, strikes demand equality on Women's Day
MOSCOW, Russia (AFP) — Protesters took to the streets in cities around the world Wednesday, marking International Women's Day with strikes and marches demanding equal rights.
In Moscow, a group of feminist activists was briefly detained after protesting inside the tightly guarded Kremlin with banners for an end to patriarchy, local media reported.
"Feminism is our national idea," read a banner carried by two protesters standing on a balcony of one of the Kremlin towers.
March 8 is a public holiday in Russia but is mainly celebrated by giving flowers and chocolates to women rather than stressing the need for gender equality. In Kiev too, around a thousand people marched calling for a return to the original feminist meaning of a holiday now largely associated with flowers and gifts.
"I came to the march just to revive the original meaning of March 8," said Alina Zabruyko, a 22-year-old student.
"From the beginning it was a day for women's rights, not a day for flowers."

Dec 15, 2016Azerbaijan can regain status of flower exporter
During the Soviet period, Azerbaijan played an important role in supplying Moscow and St. Petersburg with flowers, especially in the pre-holiday, flowers grown in Baku villages, were exported to Russia.
Until 1990s Azerbaijan was the main exporter of carnations (dianthus) to Russia.
Unfortunately, after gaining independence Azerbaijan ceased flower production, ultimately losing traditional markets. And now, Azerbaijan has turned from an exporter to an importer of flowers.
However, experts believe that Azerbaijan enjoys all conditions to develop the flower business again. Azerbaijan has excellent climatic conditions for the cultivation of flowers, including long daylight hours, climate diversity and a rich soil. The country has also an affordable work force.
The industry can meet the demand of the local market, but also set up exports of flowers. And the country is working to make the first step towards this target.
A flower processing plant will be built in Azerbaijan's Zagatala region under the presidential instructions to ensure effective use of economic potential of the country's regions and develop traditional industries.
The plant will be built as part of the measures to develop flower growing industry in Zagatala. The measures also include the establishment of a flower plantation covering a total area of 100 hectares.Nearly 250,000 rose seeds were delivered from Bulgaria, and nearly 150,000 seeds have already been planted in the plantation in a total area of 50 hectares.
