-- MARTINSBURG — Bonnie Lewis of Martinsburg bid $305 on a wreath donated by City National Bank simply because it was gorgeous.“I love it,” she said. “I’m going to hang it in my home.”Her wreath, festooned with gold ornaments, ribbons and flowers, brought the highest bid of the night as Main Street Martinsburg’s annual Doors to Christmas concluded Wednesday evening. Twenty-four wreaths decorated by businesses, groups and individuals were auctioned. Also, five 3-foot decorated trees were auctioned. Altogether, the wreaths and trees raised $3,200 for Main Street Martinsburg programs and projects.Doors to Christmas returned to the Martinsburg Public Library this year. The wreaths and trees were on displayat the library since Nov. 21.More than 100 people attended the auction to bid or enjoy the festivities. Doors to Christmas was sponsored by local State Farm agents Pam Neely, Kay Lewis and Dawn Newland. (Photo: Andrea Stetson/Correspondent)“Those are cool,” said Doug Caldwell, University of Florida Collier County Extension Office. “I’ve taken many pictures of them.”These trees are now blooming along U.S. 41 in Estero and in North Naples on U.S. 41 by Pelican Bay.The Golden Rain Trees are also in bloom now.The Golden Rain Tree has its full yellow colors now along with long thin sausage like pods. This one is in Bonita Shores. (Photo: Andrea Stetson/Correspondent)These trees are covered in bright yellow flowers and are also sprouting long, thin sausage-shaped pods. There is one in Bonita Shores right now that is especially brilliant.The tree is native to India and nearby regions of Southeast Asia. It is the state flower of Kerala in India and it is used there in herbal medicine.The Golden Rain Tree is also the national flower of Thailand. Its yellow flowers symbolize Thai royalty.Since the leaves of the tree usually fall in April, by the time it starts blooming from May to early July, it is laden with 8 to 18 inch hanging blossoms of pure yellow. The flowers are slightly scented.“It is a fast grower from India,” Caldwell explained. “It is just smothered in yellow.”The Blue Jacaranda Tree is also showing off its best colors right now.The Blue Jacaranda Tree is in full bloom with its shower of lavender flowers.
