Patricia J. 'Pat' Smith

Carl; a son, Samuel Swihart of Vancouver; five daughters, Janet Swihart of Kalama, Jill (Swihart) Bremer of Longview, Trish (Smith) Robbins of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Sarah (Smith) and Chris Gannon of Madras, and Roxann Hawley (adopted) of Seattle; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Pat was multi-talented and enjoyed creating arts and crafts, reading, researching family genealogy, and collecting books. Her passions throughout life were her artwork (painting, sculpting, and writing poetry), astronomy, teaching young students, and being involved with local 4H clubs. She raised goats, chickens, and had a garden most years from which she canned a variety of vegetables. Perhaps her most memorable contribution to the family was the completion of her book, “No Damn Hero,” chronicling her husband Carl’s service in Europe during World War II. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday with reception following at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1721 30th Ave., in Longview. A graveside service is planned for noon Sunday at Yacolt Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to a 4-H club in your area, your local VFW, or Camp Patriot.
