For the more adventurous, there are Panorama Point and the High Skyline trail. Like Sunrise, there are many trails to choose from, and you can combine them to create the perfect hike. Mowich Lake-area trails For those with a thirst for adventure and a vehicle with good suspension and clearance, the drive on 14 miles of unpaved road on the Carbon River side of the park ends at the stunning Mowich Lake picnic area and campground, which is a perfect base camp for any number of adventures. The 6-mile round-trip trek to Spray Park provides an excellent workout as you climb 1,300 feet. There is a cooling waterfall just off of a side trail before you begin the final ascent to some of the most stunning wildflower-filled meadows in the country. Around and Near the Park Naches Peak Loop and Tipsoo Lake At the very top of Chinook Pass on Highway 410 are two parking lots that lead to a stunning 3.2-mile round-trip hike on the Naches Peak Loop. You’ll first come to the Tipsoo Lake parking lot, which is a popular place to catch the Naches Peak Loop trail. The north side of the loop is on the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and the south side of the loop is in Mount Rainier National Park, so your furry companions will need to turn back at the park boundary or continue down the Pacific Crest Trail to visit Dewey Lake. This trail provides lakes, meadows, and stunning mountain views. Those who have less time or don’t want to stray too far from their vehicle can park at Tipsoo Lake, which is in the park, and view one of the most famous views of Mount Rainier reflected in a wildflower-ringed lake. Get there early in the morning before the wind picks up, when the lake water is like glass, for the best reflections. Sheep Lake to Sourdough Gap If you pass the Tipsoo Lake parking area, just around the corner, past a foot bridge, is another parking area for the Pacific Crest Trail managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Heading south from this parking area will take you to Tipsoo Lake; north will take you along the Pacific Crest Trail to Sheep Lake, Sourdough Gap, and beyond. Sheep Lake is a 3.6-mile round trip with a modest 400-foot elevation gain. The trail to and beyond Sheep Lake is lined with wildflowers. You can cool off in the lake and continue up Sourdough Gap. There are Forest Service campsites around Sheep Lake available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can cool off in the lake and continue up Sourdough Gap for more adventure. It suggests that, through mid-April at lower elevations (valley floor and alluvial fans), the best areas are Jubilee Pass, Highway 190 near the Furnace Creek Inn, the base of Daylight Pass, where you will often find desert star, blazing star, desert gold, mimulus, encelia, poppies, verbena, evening primrose, phacelia and various species of cacti (usually well above the valley floor).Death Valley also offers considerable history, both of native peoples who settled nearby thousands of years ago, and more recent exploration. Silver was discovered in the park in 1873, and Panamint City would swell to more than 5,000 residents. While the silver played out about four years later, “white gold” (borax) was discovered. A stop at the Harmony Borax Works reveals the refinery, huge 20-mule team wagons and more, which operated from 1883-88. These huge wagons would haul 36 tons of refined borax over 160 miles to the nearest railhead. The operation lasted only five years due to competition outside the desert area. The Keane Wonder Mine has been reopened after safety modifications, a gold mine that boomed from 1907 to 1912, producing more than $1 million in gold inside the park.In 1904, gold was discovered just east of the park, leading to the last real American Gold Rush. While the gold drew thousands of miners and saw several roads and a railroad built into the Rhyolite district, a financial failure led to the end of the era by 1912. The 1.2-mile long Canyon Trail has fewer wildflowers and while shorter than the other trails, is a steeper, more difficult climb.The new Candy Mountain Trail officially opens in mid-May. It is a 3.2 mile out-and-back hike that offers flowers and views of the Yakima and Columbia River basin from the Saddle Mountains all the way to Finley. Head north on Dallas Road from the West Badger Mountain trailhead underneath Interstate 182, then make a sharp left turn west. Then head up the hill a quarter-mile and the parking lot is on your right. The trailhead begins on the north side of the parking lot.The Spirit of America Trail or Freedom Trail in Kennwick is a 2.5-mile easy walking dog and kid friendly out-and-back trail off Ely Street near the Waste Management recycling station. There is also parking at the corner of Seventh and Vancouver streets. The trail goes along an intermittent stream in Zintel Canyon and is great for walking from April to November.The Sacajawea Heritage Trail offers a paved smooth blacktop 4.0-mile loop that goes from the blue bridge to the cable bridge along the south and the north side of the Columbia River between Kennewick and Pasco. Bateman Island offers a flat, 2.8-mile walking trail loop. The trail crosses the causeway and accesses the wetland habitat that forms this unique island, at the confluence of the Yakima and Columbia rivers. The trailhead is at the north end of North Columbia Center Boulevard. At the “T” in the road, turn left on Columbia Park Trail and pull into the paved parking lot on the north side of the road.Amon Basin and the Chamna Natural Preserve offer a network of walking trails along the Yakima River west of Bateman Island.
