Washington will consider allowing beekeeping

Community High School graduate, said he became interested in beekeeping after conversations with a Securitas co-worker at Caterpillar Inc.’s Mapleton foundry who has bees. After doing some research about beekeeping and deciding the backyard on South Elm Street would be a good spot for hives, Presley’s idea took flight. He said the home is in an area that’s zoned residential. But the backyard is large, “about an acre to an acre and a half,” and the area is mostly rural. Jon Oliphant, Washington’s planning and development director, said the city’s beekeeping rules in the ordinance amendment mirror regulations in other Illinois communities. Oliphant said he couldn’t find any area communities with beekeeping regulations. Washington’s rules note that anyone with honeybee hives must register annually with the Illinois Department of Agriculture, in accordance with state law, and obtain an annual beekeeping permit from the city. The permit application fee is $25. A maximum of two hives is allowed. The hives must be in the rear yard of a property and at least 25 feet from property lines. Fencing, signage and a water supply are required, and the city and Tazewell County Health Department are authorized to inspect a beekeeping operation during business hours. The Health Department will do an inspection if there are “potential problems that could be detrimental to the public’s health.” Page 2 of 2 - No other stinging insects are allowed to be kept on private property in the city. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Gen was born Aug. 11, 1924, in Sioux City. She grew up in Anthon, Iowa, and graduated from Mapleton High School. Gen married Mearl Johnson on Feb. 17, 1946, in Sioux City. Mearl was killed in action on Sept. 23, 1950, while serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Gen owned and operated her own income tax service for 25 years. She was a longtime member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church. She served on the church board as treasurer, in the Altar Society and the Ladies Club. Gen enjoyed golfing at Floyd and Green Valley Golf Courses, reading, baking, crocheting, traveling and playing scrabble. Gen also enjoyed her pets. Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Kitchens of Lawton, Iowa, and Karen Peterson of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren, Richard Rosenbaum, Gena Rosenbaum, Angela Hendrickson, Kirsten Peterson, Hillary Ferrer (and Chris), Andrew Peterson; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Gen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mearl; her longtime partner, Ed Ness; sons-in-law, Gary Peterson and Allen Kitchens; her brothers and sisters; her dear friend, Annie Rosenbaum; and her beloved cousin, Neva Bauer. Pallbearers will be Richard Rosenbaum, Andrew Peterson, Pat Corey, Jim Bauer, Jeff Ness, Gerald Stevens. Honorary pallbearer will be Lyn Rosenbaum. Students donate perennials in Lake City

The group brought around 450 plants to hand out to locals. Since starting PFP, they’ve visited Parkersburg twice, as well as Mapleton, Creston, Clarksville and Muscatine. Boss said the chapter raises money for PFP by holding a fruit, meat and cheese sales every year to go along with other fundraising projects. Murray couldn’t make the trip to Lake City this year, but student teacher Kiley Barg said the eight or nine varieties of perennials on display were grown in the school greenhouse last spring. Columbines, chest daisies and persian violets seemed to be some of the more popular varieties being handed out. “It’s great what they’re doing,” Barb Benz of Lake City said, “It’s giving back. I got some blue fescue, gaillardia and painted daisies. I’m going home and plant them right now.” ... (Carroll Daily Times Herald)

Helen Violet (Nelson) Hoeth

La Crosse. He preceded her in death April 10, 2002, after nearly 61 years of marriage. She is survived by one daughter, Carleen (Terry) Leach of Mapleton, Ill.; two grandchildren, Timothy (Gina) Leach and Todd (Mindy) Leach; and five great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Kyle, Cole, Nathan and Amanda; one nephew, Karl Nelson; and nieces, Roberta (Harold) Willenberg, Margaret (David) Listug and Dr. Kathleen McGinnis. Besides her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Nelson; and sisters, Mary (H.J.) McGinnis and Mabel (James) Fossum. Helen grew up in La Crosse, and graduated from Logan High School. After World War II, she and her family moved to Peoria, Ill., where they lived until retirement. She was a member of several organizations, including the American Institute of Banking, Iola Golf League, Iola Garden Club, Bridge Club, the former Iola Hospital Auxiliary and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She and Carl loved to travel, they visited all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. The funeral service for Helen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Iola, Wis. The Rev. Dennis W. Olson will officiate. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery in Iola after the service on Saturday. A worker in a florist shop fought off a gun-toting robber in Brooklyn and said on Sunday the crook's lucky he's not pushing up daisies. “He needs to thank God every day I didn't kill him,” said Moti Azreal, who grabbed the creep's Heritage Rough Rider .22-caliber revolver in the scuffle. Azreal was working at the A&M Wholesale Flowers and Supplies on Avenue J near McDonald Ave. in Mapleton when the gunman -- identified by cops as Keith Martin, 33, -- came in around 5:45 p.m. on Friday and asked how much a bouquet cost, police said. No sooner had Azreal told him it was $10 for a dozen roses than the perp pulled out the gun and held it inches from the worker's face. He demanded Azreal's phone and cash, police said. But Azreal refused to relent, police said. The father of two pushed the robber onto the street. During their fisticuffs, Azreal grabbed the weapon, he said. “I took the gun away from him and I hit him with his own gun,” Azreal said. (New York Daily News)
