Nov 24, 2016Table-setting tips: Your holiday meal is worth the extra effort
Blantyre
If you have fine china, now's the time to use it.
At least, that's how David Pupo, director of dining and events at Blantyre in Lenox, Mass., feels.
"I'm a strong believer in family china, it should be handed down for generations," he said. "And if you've got it, use it."
At Blantyre, a luxury hotel that was once the Berkshire estate to Robert Paterson, attention to detail is everything. Setting up for dinner service in the dining room of the grand estate - which has 23 rooms dispersed between the main house, carriage house and separate, private cottages - can take up to two hours, sometimes more.
"Our diners come for the formal experience," said Pupo, who has been at Blantyre, on and off, for 13 years. "Each table setting is individual, from the floral setting to the china. It's certainly more laborious than the typical restaurant."
But the labor is worth it, especially for the holidays. Hotel guests, and the public as well, are welcome to experience special occasion celebrations, from a prie fix Thanksgiving menu, to a New Year's Eve reception complete with selections from its award-winning wine cellar that currently houses 1... Sep 14, 2016Joliet students start their first day of school
Joliet District 86, who began their first day of school Wednesday. Students at 10 other districts across Will County – in Plainfield, New Lenox, Frankfort, Shorewood and Wilmington – also began their first day Wednesday.
Zoë stood in one of the several lines students were organized into outside the school before they headed to their classrooms to meet their new teachers. Many parents were there to watch their children, with some taking photos on their phones.

Sandburg Principal Julie Rice Zurek said she was looking forward to a wonderful year.
“I want them to have fun. I want them to work hard and I want them to be very successful,” she said. “School is a place where you learn about other people. You learn about what you might want to do someday.”
Zurek said the year was off to a great start and even the kindergartners came in without too many tears.
The front entrance of Sandburg was buzzing with parents bringing in their children for school as staff excitedly greeted them.
“Welcome back!” one staff member said to a student.
In one fourth-grade classroom, students were learning the rules of the class while organizing their supplies. Student Izzy Consalvo said she’s been looking forward to her first day back.
“I’m excited to be in the fourth grade,” she said.
At a kindergarten classroom, students worked on a project, coloring a picture and making it into a hat to wear.
Tyrell Flowers was one of those students, who said he was doing well on his first day of school. He was also wearing his new shoes.
For his coloring project, Flowers colored the typical items of a classroom – apples, pencils, rulers – and said he was starting to get good at colo... (The Herald-News)

Feb 3, 2016'Ah, life was exciting in the seventies'
Manhattan cafe society at the Carlyle, Stanhope and Waldorf-Astoria hotels for three decades, died on Sunday at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He was 92 and lived in Manhattan.
Barefoot Mailman Run
Since I'm writing about the Juno Ranch and the Jupiter Beach Hilton, it calls to mind the annual "Barefoot Mailman Run," a two-mile run from the Hilton along the beach to the Juno Ranch, where someone would stamp the envelop you carried, and then back to the Hilton.
The race was an event to raise money for Special Olympics. Each year, whoever the stars were appearing at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre would show up as honorary starters.
High point of the event was the clever Barefoot Mailman shirts designed by local artist Patti Tuning Hartig and featuring a quirky looking pelican as a mailman. ...
We hit our high point with 200 runners. The Hilton furnished hotdogs and cokes after the event.
So, from Valentine's Day memories to life in a much smaller Jupiter/Tequesta lifestyle ... that was back in the seventies and early eighties.
Well now, this is my valentine to Jupiter Courier Newsweekly readers ... a peek back at what really used to be.

STOCKBRIDGE — Jo Ann Fitzpatrick Brown, the younger sister of Berkshire lodging entrepreneur Nancy Fitzpatrick, died at her home in Stockbridge on Thursday following an 11-month battle with cancer, her sister said Friday. She was 66.
The daughter of late state Sen. John Fitzpatrick and Country Curtains founder Jane Fitzpatrick, both noted Berkshire philanthropists, Fitzpatrick Brown had been the owner-proprietor of Blantyre, a luxury lodging establishment in Lenox, since 1981.
Blantyre, a Gilded Age estate built in the early 1900s, was abandoned and falling into disrepair when John and Jane Fitzpatrick bought it in 1980. The Fitzpatricks, who had saved The Red Lion Inn from destruction when they purchased the Stockbridge lodging establishment in 1968, gave Blantyre to their daughter to run.
Under Fitzpatrick Brown's stewardship, the estate was restored to its former glory. Blantyre's hotel has earn... (Berkshire Eagle (subscription))
