Aug 17, 2018AMONG FRIENDS: Couple continues to grow business in beef, cut flowers
Highland beef cattle and cut flowers may not go together like hamburger and fries, or gin and tonic, but at Sweetheart Farms they are a working match.
Owned by Niki Allan and James Kaloc, Sweetheart Farms includes two properties, one in West River Station where the 15 cattle graze and one in Rocklin where flowers are grown.
Allan recently provided flowers for a wedding, as well as 10 colourful centrepieces including peonies, sunflowers, calendula, amaranth and sedum, for the New Glasgow Farmers' Market luau.
"It is exciting and rewarding being asked to provide flowers for events and I put a lot of time into figuring out the best way to use what I have available," she said.
Last year, with a bountiful crop, she was a regular at the farmers' market but this year the garden has taken a back seat to family life.
"We're in the process of renovating the Rocklin farmhouse and we want to be moved in by fall so that has had to be our summer priority," said Kaloc.
They need a living space better suited to their blended family of five children, rangin...
Mar 8, 2018Flowers beginning to bloom on Tyler's historic Azalea Trail
I’m not sure they’ll be fully out.”The Azalea Trail tradition dates back to 1929 when a nurseryman named Maurice Shamburger sent boxcar loads of azaleas by train from Georgia to Tyler, according to a history from Visit Tyler. That year, Mrs. Sarah Butler of the then-Tyler Courier Times Telegraph supported Shamburger in his efforts to plant azaleas around the city and planted her own azaleas at her own home, according to Visit Tyler. The azaleas grew in popularity. In 1960, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce established an official route five-miles long with 60 houses where visitors could see azaleas, according to Visit Tyler. The Azalea Trail brought 15,000 visitors in 1962, and the tradition has grown to attract, in some years, more than 100,000 visitors to the city, according to Visit Tyler.A hallmark of the event is the Azalea Belles, a group of young women in high school who dress in antebellum gowns and act as ambassadors on the trail. There are 35 Azalea Belles in 2018 who attend high schools across Smith County. The event runs for three weekends and ends April 1.TWITTER and INSTAGRAM: @_erinmansfield...
Nov 17, 2017Austria's far-right picks different flower for parliament's opening session
The Origins of Totalitarianism."Schönerer, an Austrian pan-German nationalist who died in 1921 and is buried near Hamburg, is still listed as a "radical anti-Semite" by Hamburg city-state which keeps watch on present-day adherents in Germany's ultraconservative fraternities or Burschenschaften.Rathkolb also dismissed past FPÖ explanations that the cornflower dated back to revolutionary European freedom movements of the mid-19th century, telling the Kurier that the wearing of Centaurea cyanushad for the far-right long been a provocative semantic code for "greater German, anti-Semitic, anti-clerical and anti-liberal" rhetoric.Carnations and cactiRed carnations were Thursday's buttonhole attire for the Social Democrats (SPÖ), whose lineup was reduced to 52 deputies in Austria's October 15 election. The ÖVP's Kurz wore a white rose. Liberals of the Neos party put cacti on their lecterns, signaling their intention to be a "thorn in the side" of bigger parties.Newcomer becomes speakerFirst-timer Elisabeth KöstingerElected as the lower parliamentary chamber's youngest-ever president or speaker was Elisabeth Köstinger, 38, the ÖVP's executive manager. She received only 117 of 175 valid votes. Her nomination was criticized by the SPÖ, other leftists and liberals on the grounds that she has never served in parliament and the ÖVP had not ruled out that she might soon switch to a ministerial cabinet post.Almost half of Austria's 183 parliamentarians are new to parliament.Kurz, who is currently Austria's foreign minister, and the far-right's Strache, plan to complete their coalition negotiations by December.ipj/sms (dpa, AFP)... Sep 8, 2017Valley Gardening: Plants outwitting people & vice versa
At high noon, the festivities will begin, with bands — six of them — alternating between the inside hall and the outside stage. We will have hamburgers for sale AND beer and wine, and cheesecake. I’m also hearing that three, that’s three, class reunions will be gathering, so it promises to be fun. If you would like to volunteer for a couple of hours, please give me a call at 719-580-7838. Thanks! How tough are plants you ask? Well…down in front of the Bistro Rialto, where the curb is pulling away from the sidewalk, a tomato is growing! Who knows where the seed came from, or if a bird dropped it—good aim, I guess. But it’s growing. Maybe I will purposely plant early next year and see what happens. And then where the curb is pulling away in front of Hospice, I might plant beans. Next for tough plants are the elms growing in the gutter at the Thai House Restaurant—2nd floor! I’m thinking they have been there for at least three years, maybe longer. When Society Hall was first purchased there were a couple of little rips in the roof where elms were growing. If you wanted them to grow in a specific place, they wouldn’t—go figure!Meanwhile, do you know that if you don’t “live” in Alamosa, you can’t vote on ANYTHING? You can’t even volunteer to serve on a city committee! One of my business friends suggested that this could be taxation without representation—hmmmm? I would think, maybe even hope, that just one city council member could help push this issue so that I, and many others could vote on city issues that affect us. Or do they not want us to vote? I wonder.Everybody…please be safe this weekend! Drive responsibly! Take a look at the beautiful, gorgeous vehicles in town for the 37th Early Iron Festival! Look, but don’t touch—unless you ask.
