Brandon remembers: The origins of a Memorial Day tradition

Photo by Bernie Carr) Thornton said it took "years and years to piece the story together," and said he is sure the tradition started with Frankie Davenport, the young widow who was determined to retrieve her husband's body from its shallow grave in a Virginia cornfield and return it to Brandon. She succeeded, bringing back Capt. George Davenport's body, as well as that of his best friend, who died in the same battle. Frankie Davenport was involved in the Brandon Citizens and Soldiers Association, which was formed in 1875 to make sure the town remembered its lost soldiers, Thornton said. The organization lasted until the 1940s. "Frankie was a mainstay in that, and she is listed pretty much every year as the chairwoman of the flower committee," Thornton said. "She was in charge of the flowers. I can't prove it, but it seems very obvious that she would have organized the flower girls." Thornton, whose movie will air Thursday night on Vermont Public Television, said when he moved to Brandon in 2000 he was taken by the town's Memorial Day ceremonies and watched the young girls surrounding the monument with flowers. "It just looked Victorian," he said. He said the earliest proof he can find of the flower girl tradition is 1902, based on Memorial Day programs at the Brandon Historical Society. Knapp, he said, "knew more than anybody." As far as Thornton and Knapp know, the flower girl ceremony is now unique in Vermont, although it may not have always been that way. One photograph of a group of young girls in white, joined by older women in white and boys in suits all standing on the steps of the Brandon Congregational Church, could have been on Memorial Day, Thornton said, but he isn't sure. He said the use of children during Memorial Day ceremonies was common in the late 19th and early 20th century. Flower philanthropy: Surprise bouquets delight with message of goodwill

Wilsonians were paying it forward with petals Wednesday.It was all about making somebody’s day, according to Margaret Davenport, co-owner of Gallery of Flowers in Wilson, which organized the gestures of goodwill.Davenport, Nancy Crowder, Jenny Spencer and Jenny O’Hara spent the lunch hour giving away free bouquets of flowers to anyone they encountered.But there was a catch.The recipient received two bouquets with the understanding that he or she would take one of the bunches and offer it to someone else.“It made us smile. Thanks for the smiles, sweeties,” said Tanishia Lucas, of Wilson, as she and her sister Kimberlie received theirs.“They are beautiful. I was getting ready to ask ‘Who are you all giving out flowers to?’ I’m going to be talking about this all day,” Lucas said. “We’re fixing to make somebody happy right now.”The Lucas sisters encountered the quartet of well-wishers on Nash Street in front of Bill’s Grill.“That made our day. Davenport House hosts Savannah weddings on Valentine's Day

There was more to Valentine’s Day this year than the usual flowers, sweets and fancy dinners for two couples in Savannah as they tied the knot at the Davenport House’s speed wedding event.The annual event is in its 10th year, said Jamie Credle, director of the museum and organizer of the event.“It’s a beautiful day to get married and in a beautiful space,” she said. “We feel that this is an economic option and after exchanging vows, couples can have dinner together or do something else together instead of having a grand ceremony.”For a $150 donation to the museum, a couple can be married in the museum’s scenic courtyard garden just off State Street with a ceremony starting every 15 minutes.And each couple that comes through is different, Credle said.You definitely see different personal styles — we’ve had some get married in shorts and flip flops and we have some come in a wedding dress and arrive in a carriage,” she said.Kaitlyn Pratt and Tim Andrews decided to get married at the historic site because of its beauty and Pratt’s history in Savannah. Davenport students head to class on a Saturday for Catch Up Academy

It's a new program at Davenport Central High School, giving kids a chance to stay up on their homework. Admittedly, being in school on a Saturday isn't typically high on a student's list of things to do. "Yeah, I should be asleep. But I'm not," Davenport Central 11th grader Claire Townzel said. However, these students are hitting the books for a few hours trying to catch up on their work. "What we're finding out is that all of our kids want to be successful, they just need more opportunities," Davenport Central Associate Principal Julie Heller said. It's the second Catch Up Academy, a day where a few teachers come into their classrooms on a Saturday and help students with whatever they need. "I had missing work.
