Apr 4, 2021COLUMN: The golden flowers of the trumpet tree - yoursun.com
Locate trumpet trees in a full sun to part-shade area with well-drained, but moderately moist soil. All the trumpet trees tend to develop brittle wood as they age. As such, wind damage can be an issue. Proper pruning may help train a tree to be more wind-resistant over its lifetime. Use the trumpet tree as a specimen tree in a lawn area where it will best be seen and admired in season.Trumpet trees are not just on Cochran Boulevard, but are found throughout Southwest Florida. Remember the trumpet tree as you plan out your landscape – they are Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommended plants and real show-offs.
Apr 4, 2021Will late rains bring a wildflower super bloom to California deserts this year? - Desert Sun
Perennials like ocotillo likely have enough moisture and sugars stored in their roots and stems to bloom, Cornett explained. Brittlebush is also sporting its typical yellow daisy-like petals. But even ocotillos "have their limit," he said. Too many recent, severe droughts have done in some plants. "In the California deserts, indeed in the West in general, we are getting about 10% less rainfall and twice as many droughts lasting three years or longer," said Cornett. "This is the price we're paying for climate change, these recurring droughts that are occurring more frequently, and that are more severe than any in recorded history." There are bright spots, though, particularly in burn areas. An iconic grove of California fan palms that was set ablaze by a young arsonist last year has come back strong, with eight-foot-wide spiky fronds shooting out of what appeared to be charred stumps last March. Burn scars can unleash wildflowers on steroids, if there are gentle, steady rains. But the green velvet now covering recently scorched Riverside and Orange County hills is also often comprised of nonnative mustard and other species with no natural predators. That means they can crowd out more fragile blooms that also provide good forage and shelter for songbirds, honeybees and other wildlife, via a process known as "type conversion."media-image image-set="https://www.gannett-cdn.com/presto/2021/03/16/PPAS/c6b0ea7e-a8e8-4b32-b876-920997729794-Palm_Canyon_palms_2021.jpg bestCrop, https://www.gannett-cdn.com/presto/2...
Apr 4, 2021No 'super bloom' but wildflowers still coming to Anza-Borrego - Los Angeles Times

Those rain-fueled super blooms occurred in 2017 and 2019, and they each drew an estimated 250,000 to 500,000 visitors during peak season. The 2017 bloom, nicknamed “flowermageddon” by some, was such a legendary tourist magnet that weekend traffic backed up 20 miles on Montezuma Valley Road (County Highway S-22), the road that leads into the 630,000-acre state park in east San Diego County. Knaak said visitors arriving this month won’t see fields of color, but they will spot pockets of flowers and annual blooming shrubs, especially if they venture to the shadier areas that retain some moisture, such as Box Canyon, Rainbow Canyon and Hornblend Canyon. “We don’t want people to get their hopes up too high,” she said. “Right now people are reporting patches here and there, especially in the area we call south of Scissors Crossing. They’re seeing some nice blooms. Not big fields or anything, but people who are into botany are finding them.”

In a phone interview last week, Knaak said the forecast for the rest of the peak season wasn’t looking great. Then she called back 20 minutes later with joy and excitement in her voice.
“Do you hear that?” she asked, holding the phone to the window at the history association’s office, where a roar of rain was coming down. “It’s pouring. This is a game-changer.”According to the National Weather Service, a little under a quarter-inch of rain fell in the Borrego desert Wednesday afternoon. That may not sound like m...
Apr 4, 2021International Women’s Day Marked With Special Delivery Of Flowers For Frontline Workers At Elmhurst Hospital - CBS New York
Seventy percent of employees are female. Perfect time to give and show appreciation,” said Petals For Hope founder Brittaney Sard.
Sard founded Petals For Hope three years ago. The nonprofit rescues flowers from events and weddings, then repurposes them to bring joy to those who could use a little color in their world.

Monday’s handoff was somewhat different. U.S. tulip growers and European bulb suppliers donated the signs of spring to Petals of Hope so that 1,000 bouquets make into the hands of women on the frontlines.
“Do these make you happy today?” Murdock asked.
“They sure do,” said Chief Nursing Officer Joann Gull. “They bring a smile to all our staff. Spring is here, a time to rejoice and feel better, thanks to the vaccine.”
Sard describes delivering the blooms Monday as emotional and overwhelming.
“Seeing everything they’ve given – time with family, health – just to make sure we stay safe means so much,” Sard said.READ MORE: REMINDER: COVID Vaccine Eligibility In New Jersey Drops To Age 55-Plus And Others With Disabilities On Monday
The delivery to Elmhurst Hospital is one of 10 happening across the country in celebration of International Women’s Day.
“I walk on the shoulders of so many women who do little things every day to make health care better,” said Elmhurst Hospital CEO Helena Arteaga Landaverde.
Landaverde is the first woman to hold the title CEO at the hospital. She has something she wants little girls to know.
“Your zip code does not define you,” she said.
Her roots go deep in Corona, Queens.
“Being a person of color in this zip code, the likelihood of you being a successful leader and CEO is slim, less than 4%,” she said.
Landaverde defied the odds.
“Elmhurst Hospital, one of biggest in Queens, and someo...
