Philip Bringman

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesis Hospice or Princeton Presbyterian Church. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements. Born Aug. 19, 1936, in Akron, Iowa, Phil was the son of Harold and Ora (Talbott) Bringman. On Feb. 7, 1958, in Worthington, Minn., he married Geraldine J. Malcom. Phil worked as an electronic technician for AT&T. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards and, in his younger days, playing softball and skiing. Phil cherished his time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Geraldine; children, Connie (Scott) Carter, Princeton, James (Kathy) Bringman, Gig Harbor, Wash., Cindy (Paul) Carter, Princeton, and Cari Bringman, Princeton; nine grandchildren;  eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Boyer and Ruth Moses; and brothers, Walter, Paul and David. Bakers' dozen: his children are Linda Vaughn (Jeff), Machesney Park, Ill., Kathleen McIntosh (Jim Turner), Fenton Ill., Marcia Allen, Bettendorf, Christine Baker (Don “Speedy” Williams), Silvis, Denise Baker, Silvis, Daniel Baker (Pammy Gomez), Marty Baker, Pamela Baker, Paula Baker, all of East Moline; Sandra Cordova (Floyd) Thornton, Colo., and Steve Baker(deceased); 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helena Eckert, brother, Kenneth Baker, son, Steve Baker who died of ALS in 2004, and his grandson, Paul Baker. We could not have asked for a more wonderful husband and father. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him loved him. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Shalaina Waite and Dea Hargrave and the Memory Care unit of Hope Creek Care Center for Merwin’s excellent care. Also, the fifth graders in Susie Vens' class at Wilson Elementary School, Davenport, contributed to an Advent calendar display at the German American Heritage Center and Jeff and Malinda Schirm of Bettendorf shared their Peanuts collection. 10. Gardens. In Davenport, we visited the color-filled garden of Ken Krumwiede, the 'slippery slope' of Cynthia Westerfield and the native roots yard of Lee Ann Wille. Elsewhere: Jeannie and Larry Anderson of East Moline were on the always-amazing Silvis Garden Club walk, Dan and Connie Hook participated in the Clinton County Master Gardeners walk, Allan Pillard and Dawn McMeen highlighted the Princeton garden walk and Fritz Fuhs of Davenport began planting a formerly abandoned lot next to his. 11. Home improvement. Brandon Southwick personally laid 1,500 square feet of new hardwood at his 20-year-old Bettendorf home. Q-C builder Mark McManus debuted a new porcelain deck tile and installation system at the Quad-Cities Builders & Remodelers Association Home Show. Joshua Meyer of Moline made a name for himself by building high-end bathrooms. Dan and Pat Jens replaced the two-tier deck of their Park View home with a four-season sunroom. 12. Neat stuff. Beth Anne Smiley, Davenport, shared her primitive rug hooking. Tom Staff of Milan and about 70 other people decorated pink flamingos for a Quad-City Botanical Center fundraiser. Tom Schlicksup, of Knilans' Furniture, added a Quad-City angle to the German American Heritage Center's exhibit on Stickly furniture. Kathy and Mike McClothlen's Muscatine quilt shop was featured in a Better Homes & Gardens publication. Dick Taber explained the ins and outs of estate sales. 13. Education. University extension services in Illinois and Iowa sponsored  seminars to help gardeners learn about all kinds of topics. Presenters and topics included Martha Smith, building rock gardens; Ryan Welch, the need to save prairies; Paul Rost, new hydrangeas; Tom Monroe, how to start plants from seed; Dan Mays, moths; and Bill Brunkan, garden-helpful smartphone applications. 14. Special recognition. To Joe Weston, a lifelong railroad buff from Grand Mound, Iowa, who organized an extensive upgrade of a model railroad garden at the Quad-City Botanical Center, Rock Island. 15.
