Indigenous flowers‚ candles and a set menu for 90 guests at ...

Mandela will be joined by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa at the birthday bash‚ to be held at the Planet Restaurant and Bar at the renowned Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. The event precedes her actual birthday: the former wife of late statesman Nelson Mandela officially turns 80 on September 26. One of the organisers of the event‚ Aubrey Ngcungama‚ today told TMG Digital that the dinner will include an address by Ramaphosa‚ speeches by some of the Mandela family members and possibly an address by Madikizela-Mandela herself. “It is her birthday‚ so we don’t want to make any promises that she will be speaking. Of course we would love her to though‚” Ngcungama said. “The menu will consist of a set menu with a light starter of asparagus‚ a fish or a meat main‚ and a tray of citrus for dessert. “The décor is also very very understated. “The tables will be covered with a white tablecloth with a scattering of indigenous flowers with some candles and simple glassware‚” Ngcungama added. Approximately 90 guests will join Madikizela-Mandela for the celebratory black-tie dinner. "The capacity of the restaurant is 90 people‚ so it's going to be relatively intimate‚" Ngcungama added. A tribute concert is also scheduled for Cape Town on Thursday. Veteran artists Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya will “curate and perform” at the Artscape concert‚ with tickets on offer from R200 to R750 from Computicket‚ the Mandela Legacy said. Expla... Famed Iowa philanthropist Richard Jacobson dies

Iowans to follow his example.(Photo: Special to the Register) Before he graduated in 1954, Richard Jacobson’s high school classmates in tiny Belmond, Iowa., nominated him “least likely to succeed.” They couldn’t have been more wrong. In 1968, with a single warehouse and a few thousand dollars, he founded Jacobson Cos. in Des Moines, eventually turning the business into a shipping and logistics giant employing thousands of workers. But it is Jacobson's philanthropy that likely will be his greatest legacy. He gave hundreds of millions of dollars to Iowa's universities and the Mayo Clinic — many of those gifts were the largest those institutions had ever received to that date — and inspired other wealthy Iowans to follow his example. “Dick’s commitment to contributing to make a difference is one of the reasons (it’s) instilled in me that you ought to do that when you have success,” said Iowa Board of Regents President and businessman Bruce Rastetter. Jacoboson died Friday at his Florida home of stomach cancer. He was 79. Born in Greeley, Colo., Jacobson grew up in Belmond.  Friends, employees and business partners described Jacobson as a quick-witted storyteller, a humble Iowan, a frugal businessman and a generous giver. When employees stayed at a hotel on a business trip, Jacobson expected them to bring back pens, pads and other hotel-provided items. DES MOINES REGISTER Richard Jacobson was Cyclone, Hawkeye, Panther, Bulldog “He never wanted to see a purchased pen in the office,” said Doug Den Adel, the trust manager for the Rich...
