Lewes Tulip Celebration to bring spring cheer April 2-11 - CapeGazette.com

West Third St. The Peninsula Gallery’s Local Favorites art exhibition will be on display Saturday, April 3 to Sunday, April 25, at 520 East Savannah Road. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. Two florist shops in Lewes are participating in the celebration. Floral Inspirations, located on the beach side of the canal at 524 E. Savannah Road in the shops under the Beacon Motel, will have flower-arranging demonstrations from noon to 3 p.m., April 2, 3, 9 and 10. A wide variety of colorful spring tulips will be on hand for purchase as well. Owner/designer Ken Norman encourages people to stop in just for the smell of it. Owner/designer Mayumi Williamson of Flowers by Mayumi in the historic business district at 128 Second St., will host a drop-in floral-arranging demonstration from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 8. Lewes Historical Society will offer a Maritime History walking tour at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 10, beginning at the Ryves Holt House, 218 Second St. An Architectural History walking tour will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 11. Tours cost $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets for either tour at historiclewes.org under the Visit tab. GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club is taking geranium orders through Thursday, April 15, to benefit its community service programs. Pickup will be Saturday, May 1, at Lewes in Bloom’s warehouse, 217 Schley Ave., Lewes. Cost is $6 per 6-inch pot of pink, white, red or salmon blooms. Plant of the Month: Sausage tree is an exotic specimen and unique addition - West Hawaii Today

Native to South and East Africa’s wet savannahs, the tree can eventually grow to more than 30 feet. After about five years, it will start producing long racemes of deep red flowers followed by large sausage-shaped seedpods. The seedpods as well as the flowers make this tree a striking addition to a Hawaiian landscape. Known botanically as Kigelia africana, the sausage tree is one of about 100 species in the Bignoniaceae family that grow in Hawaiian gardens. Both the better-known jacaranda and gold trees are close relatives that are similar in size and have their own striking characteristics. ADVERTISING The sausage tree has long been cultivated in tropical locales around the world, but it did not arrive in Hawaii until the 1800s. By early 1900, several specimens were growing in parks and on campuses around Oahu. The poppy field in Mantua is in bloom - Cache Valley Daily

Utah State University. Kellie Funk of Pleasant View had seen pictures taken of the poppies and brought her two daughters Kennedy and Savannah. It’s Kennedy’s senior year of high school, giving Kellie an opportunity to photograph her senior student. The red poppies against the green can be a great background or stand alone for photographs. “I knew they were here, but I didn’t realize how close it was,” Kelly says. “It is beautiful here.” About 10 families were tromping through the tiny trails to get the best shots. Someone said the flowers should still be in bloom until the end of the month. Lifelong Mantua resident Terry Nelson, a retired seminary teacher, was out hoeing the garden next to his grandfather’s house that he lives in. He said the house was built in 1873. If anyone knew the origin of the poppies, a longtime resident of Mantua should. “The story I’ve been told about the poppies goes back to one of the early settlers of Mantua,” Nelson explains. “Danish immigrant Hans Rasmussen’s wife brought some seeds from Denmark and planted them.” Kellie Funk of Pleasant View photographs her two daughters Savannah and Kennedy on Monday afternoon in the poppy fields of Mantua. Nelson says there was a barn and a house on the hill above the patch. He thought Rasmussen owned the ground area where the Box Elder Campground is and donated it to the Forest Service. “The poppies have always been there, but people have just started to come to see them,” Nelson says. “They must be a pretty hardy plant as easy as they grow.
