That spurred a study to test, for as many wild bee species as possible, whether males and females visit different kinds of flowers. (Credit: Michael Roswell/Rutgers-New Brunswick) New Jersey is home to about 400 species of wild bees—not including Apis mellifera Linnaeus, the domesticated western honeybee whose males do not forage for food, Roswell notes. The scientists collected 18,698 bees from 152 species in New Jersey. The bees visited 109 flower species in six semi-natural meadows with highly abundant and diverse flowers. The meadows were managed to promote mostly native flowers that attract pollinators. Female bees build, maintain, collect food for and defend nests, while male bees primarily seek mates. Both sexes drink floral nectar for food, but only females collect pollen that serves as food for young bees, so they forage at greater rates than males...

Continuous flowering benefits bees

Last year rabbits chopped the stems off my hostas at ground level. Is there anything to discourage them from feasting again this year? Scott Blake, Roswell.A: Like deer, rabbits will eat just about anything that’s young and tender in spring. A physical barrier is the only thing I can guarantee will work. Perhaps you could make some coverings from chicken wire to protect the hosta until they are relatively large. If you can’t do that, try fertilizing with Milorganite. This dry, sterilized organic fertilizer comes from a sewage plant in Milwaukee. Perhaps the smell of bratwurst, beer, and shotguns will deter the bunnies. Decatur nonprofit's flower kits help bring science to life for GA students

So far, 112 kits have gone out, with 89 of those to students at Alpharetta Elementary School and others to parents in Brookhaven and Roswell.The nonprofit is the idea of Decatur resident and Emory student, Gabriela Kova.
