Mountain Flowers of Aspen spreading joy through flowers - Aspen Daily News
ADN: What, if any, collaborations are you seeking in the local business community or with bodies like the Aspen Chamber of Commerce?KA: We partner with the chamber of commerce. We’re looking at doing a photo shoot to give brides inspiration on smaller, more casual weddings. We’ll do a styled shoot like that. We’re talking about partnering with Bundles Gifts Co., which was started by Wesley Jacobs Brown.ADN: What do you need to make it through the season?WB: Great products, which is definitely happening, and we need all of our customers to support us.KA: Especially as things slow down through the offseason and the winter season is looking less certain, we really do. We’ve been a local flower shop serving this community day in and day out. We stay open all year long. We want to be here to support our community and we need them to come in and shop and buy things, even little things. Every sale adds up for us.ADN: What keeps you going?KA: [In July] we had a gal come up from Denver. She had planned a big, huge wedding for September and wasn’t able to do it. They decided to elope over the weekend. She called, I answered the phone, and we made a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers that really reflected her and her event. She was saying, “Oh, my fiance doesn’t want to wear a boutonniere,” and I said, “What about this? What if we made it really simple with wildflowers and wrapped it in raffia?” She said, “Yeah, yeah! OK! That’s it!” That feeling of catching fire with someone who is so excited about something. It makes it worth it being there on a Saturday morning when all my sons are out hiking and doing fun things. It’s wonderful to see that come alive.ADN: What’s one thing you want the community to know?KA: We’re well-equipped to help because we listen and we care. We’ll take the time to sit down with someone and go over what they need and whether that’s something super grand for a beautiful party or something intimate just to say “I’m sorry” between friends. We really have the ability to tailor our goods to the situation, whatever someone needs.I grew up here — I was born here. Wendy has been here for 40 years — longer than me, technically. We really want to see this community thrive and participate in that.WB: And I think the fact that we’re all in this together is something we can really get our hearts around. We all need each other.ADN: What is your favorite flower?KA: Oh goodness! I really love sweet peas and hellebore.WB: I love peonies, but I also love any flower that’s at its prime in any season. It’s too hard to have one.Name of organization: Mountain Flowers of AspenYears in business: 24Address: 103 S. Village Flower Basket program still in bloom - Pamplin Media Group
Though the Village Flower Basket program, managed by the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, donors and community support have helped keep the program running for its 30th year. "It enhances the quality of life, bringing an aesthetic beauty to the city as residents as well as visitors travel along the main rights-of-way," said Julia Fowler, president of the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce, in an email. "The flower basket program is also a very visual and public way of saying, 'We care about this town enough to invest in its beauty.' That message can be appealing not only to residents but newcomers." A total of 154 baskets were hung the week of May 18 throughout the city by The Garden Corner employees — the owner, Jonn Karsseboom, and his crew plant the baskets months in advance and his team maintains the baskets.
"Our longstanding tradition of using community volunteers to hang the baskets had to be suspended," Fowler said. "We have some folks that have been participating in the hanging event for more than 20 years. We really wanted to make it happen but in the end, we found no modifications that could be made to adequately maintain social distancing." Karsseboom sai... May 1, 2020

Flowers that may bring a light of hope to downtown San Luis Obispo - Mustang News
COVID-19 pandemic to slow, and, for the city of San Luis Obispo, it means reminding people that Downtown SLO is a vibrant center for creativity and commerce and it will be opening once recovery begins.
“We really wanted to do something light and bright, in a time where it’s been, you know, a lot of darkness and quiet and uncertainty,” Downtown SLO Chief Executive Officer Bettina Swigger said.
Starting the first week of May, several businesses in downtown SLO will be painted with environmentally-friendly temporary paint with floral art themes. The paint will be on the exterior of windows, but business owners can also create floral displays inside their windows if they choose to.
Some businesses that are taking part are Creeky Tiki, The Blade Runner, Linnaeas Café, and Sidecar. Swigger said that once businesses saw the art being painted, others asked if they could also participate. The map of businesses can be viewed here.
“We know there are a ton of really creative people who are business owners and we also have a really vibrant arts community in San Luis Obispo,” Swigger said. “So we thought, okay what can we do that combines the powers of all that creativity and does something so people can experience downtown, maybe go downtown in a safe way so that they’re no... AURORA OUTLIER: Southlands blooming among an industry of fading flowers - Sentinel Colorado
Indoor shopping centers in particular have suffered with the rise of e-commerce. But that industry’s tentacles are long: last year, online retail sales surpassed department store buys for the first time, according to U.S. Department of Commerce reports, reaching almost 12 percent of all retail sales in the first quarter of 2019. That’s up from just 4 percent at the beginning of 2010, the Sentinel reported in January.
But Kevin Hougen, president of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, said the market shocks aren’t plaguing Southlands.
“I can see why they are very optimistic there about their future growth,” he said.
Hougen situated Southlands in positive economic outlooks for east Aurora as a whole. A booming residential sector brings more homes to the plains seemingly every month. Those residents will need retail, he said, and Southlands will provide. He thinks economic development near Denver International Airport and Buckley Air Force base is also contributing to a healthy, regional economy.
But he thinks e-commerce is doing much more harm to businesses than people know.
“I think they are under attack by the internet,” he said. “There’s too many people shopping online and not supporting our brick and mortars.”
There are some similarities in strategy at the mostly open-air Southlands and Aurora’s indoor mall, the Town Center at Aurora, located near the Intersection of East Alameda Avenue and Interstate 225.
Both are regularly hosting events to keep folks coming into stores. Southlands created a popular “sensory-friendly Santa” event inDecember tailored for children and adults on the autism spectrum normally bugged by bright lights and too many kids. The mall also hosts holiday parades, which Hougen said he enjoys.
For its part, the Town Center is converting its old Sears space into an indoor sport emporium and separately hosting high school wrestling events that have been well-attended.
The sales tax revenue generated at these malls is crucial for the city, Hougen said.
In the Town Center, sales taxes businesses paid to the city of Aurora in 2018 passed a $5.8 million benchmark for the first time in 15 years, making the mall eligible for a significant tax rebate.
Southlands is regularly contributing more in sales tax revenue, reaching $11,420,746 in 2018 after a multi-year increase.
