May 1, 2020Waddington florist delivers springtime cheer amid virus blues - NNY360
SUNY Potsdam as an art student in the 1980s, Mrs. Domena took jobs that took her across the state. She worked at her sister’s flower shop in Canton and eventually started her own shop in Waddington. And she’s always brought an artistry, a creativity, a vibrancy to her florist work, Mr. Domena said.“I couldn’t imagine not doing it,” Mrs. Domena said. “There’s nothing better when you knock on someone’s door with a bouquet of flowers.”Even with community support, Waddington Blooms, like small businesses around the country, has been challenged by the social and economic standstills incited by the novel coronavirus. The Domenas have found it difficult to keep flowers stocked, but have arranged to buy cuts directly from area producers. And while the shop is closed to customers, they’ve developed a “porch exchange” protocol to maintain social distances. But setbacks and operation adjustments have only made Waddington Blooms’ mission more essential, Mr. Domena said, as he read the sign that hangs on the shop’s door.“For our physiological well-being, we need a psychological uplift,” he said. “Flowers do that.”Waddington Blooms, 138 Lincoln Ave., can be reached by calling 315-388-4299.
Dec 14, 2018Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank looking for holiday boost - The-review
December usually is the month when community support for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank hits its highest level.
But this year there is heightened concern at the food bank because donations of cash and collected food trail 2017 by about 6 percent.
Dan Flowers, president and chief executive officer, isn't sure why donations have slipped, but he hopes the gap can be closed before the year ends.
The agency is in the midst of its annual Holiday Campaign, which hopes to generate donations equal to 7 million meals. A $1 donation to the food bank can provide four meals, while a donation of 1.2 pounds of food is equal to one meal.
Events during the holiday push include the sixth annual Selfless Elf 5K run Dec. 22 and the annual Long Haul Against Hunger, in conjunction with local iHeartMedia radio stations, which last Friday generated enough donations to equal 468,000 meals.
"This is the time of the year when it counts," Flowers said, adding that he hopes communities rally to help.

Apr 20, 2018Video: Canton girl melts hearts by leaving flowers on neighbors' doorsteps
A five-year-old Canton girl has melted hearts with the simple, yet thoughtful gesture of giving out flowers to her neighbors.Canton resident Amy Houck, 33, captured her daughter Jade distributing dandelions on the front steps of her neighbors’ homes on Friday and shared the gracious moment in a video on the Canton Neighbors Facebook group. The video, shared Saturday, has received more than 1,500 likes and around 60 comments.Houck said her daughter got the idea after school when they were walking around a neighborhood square and Jade spotted lilies. She wanted to pick them, but Houck encouraged her to pick the dandelions instead, after which Jade gathered a large pile and began putting an individual flower on her neighbors’ doorsteps.“She was talking to herself, saying ‘All the people would be so happy if they had flowers!’” Houck said. The moment prompted Houck to whip out her camera to capture the tail-end of Jade’s random act of kindness. (By that time, Jade had already given flowers to around 10 ho... (Baltimore Sun (blog))

Nov 17, 2017Interesting Plants Around Canton Lake
I was fortunate enough to camp at Canton Lake twice this summer. While enjoying peaceful kayak rides along the shoreline I found two plants that I’d never seen before. It’s always exciting to find new plants, but these were particularly thrilling. They are both native plants, and to me represent a healthy diversity of plant life in that area.In the spring the water was high enough for me to kayak up Copperas creek a little ways. As I entered the creek area, there were many plants with interesting purple-tipped flowers. After some investigation, I identified them as false indigo bush (Amorpha fruticosa).False indigo bush is a 4- to 16-foot tall shrubby plant. Its leaves are very similar to locust trees, which means they have 11-35 smaller leaflet on each leaf. Leaflets are each one to two inches long with rounded edges. It was the flowers that caught my eye. Attractive purple flowers with neon orange stamens. Individual flowers are about ¼ inch long, with many flowers arranged along long stems (racemes). This plant is a... (Peoria Journal Star (blog))
