Take a home and garden tour through Eau Gallie - Florida Today

The sun room ceiling was inspired by a porch ceiling seen in Charleston and the dining room by a pineapple Alaskan chandelier purchased in Vero Beach. The laundry room was inspired by a screen door purchased at Shelly’s and the downstairs bath by an 1800’s “bowl and pitcher” vanity from France and an old tub once used as a flower pot. In addition to a visit to the Mitchell House, the $20 donation for the tour includes admission to six other stops, among them the Rossetter House Museum and Gardens. Descended from 17th century New England pioneers, James Rossetter arrived in Eau Gallie in 1902 to make his mark in the local fishing industry as a charter partner of the Indian River & Lake Worth Fish Company. He bought a small structure on the current site in 1904, but soon needed more room for his expanding family. Instead of building an addition, Rossetter opted to buy the winter home of wealthy New York industrialist John Aspinwall and move it down the Indian River to his Eau Gallie lot. The Aspinwall house, built in 1890, is now the west wing of the house, which Rossetter connected to the existing building with open-air breezeways. A visit to the house and grounds transports visitors to the well-heeled Florida of the early 1900s. When the Rossetter sisters willed the property to the Rossetter Foundation, they left not only the house and gardens, but also all the furnishings, including Ella’s 1930s Model A Ford convertible, often used as backdrop for many weddings. Both women were ahead of their time. Carrie was the first woman agent for Standard Oil of Kentucky and owned several gas stations in the county. Ella owned and operated the Rossetter Insurance Agency. Pillars of the community, they supported local churches, museums and the Florida Institu...

Inspiration will bloom at annual yard, garden show this weekend

Deidre Peters, will bring about 60 of their 250 unique croton varieties to the Extension Office this weekend from their nursery in Vero Beach, Florida, where they've been in business for about 12 years. And they are seriously crazy about crotons. "You can’t buy these crotons on the open market," Mark Peters said. "The crotons we sell are considered historic varieties. They were produced 100 years ago." The polychrome, krakatoa and Thomas Edison varieties are a few that he's most excited about lately. The splashy shrubbery are colorful 12 months out of the year, Peters said, and are a staple in tropical gardens. "These are all varieties that collectors are scrambling after because they’re so beautiful," he said. "If you’re a lover of plants and you can appreciate what mother nature produces...it really just makes you drop to your knees they’re so beautiful." Known for its selection of exotic plants, the Green Door Nursery in Naples is a veteran of the Yard and Garden Show — and a crowd favorite. "We actually hand pick everything before we go," owner Joel Toledo said. "We always get the best looking stuff, things th... (Naples Daily News)
